Austrian company SAFEDI Distance Control GmbH takes a completely different approach. Its product innovation SAFEDI is intended to also help industrial companies minimize the risk of coronavirus infection in their workforce.

Based on the further development of Bluetooth technology, the sensor system is able to determine the distance between two or more people in the near and facial area, which is particularly sensitive to infections. The battery is rechargeable via Micro-USB cable. In a field test with four companies from different industries, SAFEDI has proven its suitability for practical use, and series production has started. Christian Beer, owner and managing director of the Dornbirn-based company, explains the idea behind it: “With our distance warning device, we want to help shorten the economic and social standstill, because companies can use it to maintain their operations.”

The 15-gram clip is about the size of a coin and can be attached to clothing or worn on a chain. Its range is up to eight meters. As soon as people approach each other, the SAFEDI device triggers an optical signal as a pre-warning. If two people fall below the minimum distance, optical and acoustic signals are continuously released. All users can register their devices online and keep an anonymous close contact log. The log records which ID numbers have come close to each other. Once an infection is detected, those SAFEDI devices are notified that were in close contact with the infected person, according to the close contact log. This is done via push notification, which contains recommendations for required action. All users remain completely anonymous. The system works completely without personal data. Only the SAFEDI ID of the device is registered for keeping the close contact log, not the person. All ID numbers older than the possible incubation period of 14 days are automatically deleted.

Huami’s Amazfit Aeri Mask Self-Disinfects and Unlocks Your Phone With Face ID
Wearing a mask is one of the effective ways to tackle the spread of coronavirus. But many of us find it difficult to unlock our phone with face ID while wearing a mask. Huami wants to make it easier for you to do this task. The Chinese tech giant, best known for its Amazfit wearable devices, is working on a transparent N95-like face mask that allows wearers to unlock their phone while wearing it and also clean itself.

When news of people having difficulties unlocking their devices first began to surface, Huami announced it was working on a mask that will allow wearers to unlock their phone using Face ID without having to take off the mask. Huami has now shared drawings of what the mask looks like.
Many US cities require their residents to wear masks in public. However, people are now relying on cloth masks because N95 and surgical masks are both reserved for health care workers.
Although these types of masks are helpful in containing the virus, they have significant drawbacks. They fail to filter out small air particles, they’re not well ventilated and they have to be washed properly on a regular basis. Also, you’d find it very difficult to unlock your phone using facial recognition while you’re wearing this mask, reports CNet.
Huami’s Amazfit Aeri mask is supposed to solve most of these problems. The mask contains removable air filters and built-in ultraviolet light emitters. Simply plug the mask after every use into a USB-C plug for a few minutes, and it’ll disinfect itself. This would allow each filter to be effective for one and a half months, said a Huami spokesperson. That’s much longer than the current eight hours N95 masks are good for.
It should be noted that according to US FDA specification, N95 mask should block 95% of all particles (hence the name N95). But it’s not clear whether Huami’s Amazfit Aeri mask meets this requirement.
The Amazfit Aeri is a transparent mask, and according to Huami it’ll be made of anti-fog material, which will make it easier to unlock your phone using Face ID.

The company is currently making prototypes of the new masks but said it will likely take six months to a year to make it available in the market. Huami didn’t say anything about the price but said it plans to make it as affordable as its other products.

This Wearable Sensor Helps Your Body Maintain Optimal Levels Of Vitamin C By Detecting It In Your Sweat
Vitamin C is one of the most effective nutrients. Its benefits include protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling. Vitamin C cannot be synthesized by our body, so it must be obtained through our food or via vitamin supplements. But how do you make sure that your body has optimal levels of this nutrient? Until now, it wasn’t possible to gauge the levels of vitamin C without a blood test. Now, researchers at the University of California San Diego have developed flexible sensors that can be worn on the skin to sensitively track vitamin C levels in sweat. The device could be useful for people to track their daily nutritional intake and dietary adherence. The study was published in ACS Sensors.

“Wearable sensors have traditionally been focused on their use in tracking physical activity, or for monitoring disease pathologies, like in diabetes,” said first-author Juliane Sempionatto, a PhD Candidate in nanoengineering in Joseph Wang’s lab at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering. “This is the first demonstration of using an enzyme-based approach to track changes in the level of necessary vitamin, and opens a new frontier in the wearable device arena.”
“Wearable sensors have rarely been considered for precision nutrition,” said Joseph Wang, a professor of nanoengineering and director of the Center of Wearable Sensors at UC San Diego.
Vitamin C is also being studied in several clinical trials for its potential in supporting recovery from COVID-19. A handful of past studies have showed that high doses of Vitamin C, along with other treatments can reduce mortality rates in patients with sepsis and, in one study, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) – both common conditions seen in serious cases where patients with COVID-19 require intensive care and intubation, writes Alison Caldwell, Bigelow Science Communication Fellow at UC San Diego.
This Is How The Device Works
The new wearable device consists of an adhesive patch that can be applied to a user’s skin, containing a system to stimulate sweating and an electrode sensor designed to quickly detect vitamin C levels in sweat. To do so, the device includes flexible electrodes containing the enzyme ascorbate oxidase. When vitamin C is present, the enzyme converts it to dehydroascrobic acid and the resulting consumption of oxygen generates a current that is measured by the device.
In vitro testing and testing in four human subjects who had consumed vitamin C supplements and vitamin C-containing fruit juices showed that the device was highly sensitive to detecting changes in the levels and dynamics of the vitamin when tracked across two hours, UC San Diego report said.

“Ultimately, this sort of device would be valuable for supporting behavioral changes around diet and nutrition,” said Sempionatto. “A user could track not just vitamin C, but other nutrients – a multivitamin patch, if you will. This is a field that will keep growing fast.” The UC San Diego team is closely collaborating with a major global nutrition company DSM towards the use of wearable sensors for personal nutrition.

imec Spin-Off And Ghent University Present Lopos SafeDistance, A Wearable For Maintaining Social Distance
Lopos, a spin-off of imec, in collaboration with Ghent University developed Lopos SafeDistance wearable that supports companies in remaining active or safely restarting in-person activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The wearable warns employees through an audible or haptic alarm, when they are violating the social distancing guidelines while approaching each other. The solution guarantees absolute privacy of the user. After successful pilots at medium and large companies in the chemical, metal and construction industry, Lopos is now scaling up to mass production, reports imec.
“In order to limit the spread of COVID-19 as much as possible, it is crucial that we adhere to the social distancing guidelines set by international health experts and governments. The SafeDistance wearable is an intuitive solution that endorses social distancing guidelines in a professional environment. Employees can easily carry the wearable via a clip on the hip or a lanyard and rest assured that they are working within a safe distance,” explains Jen Rossey, CEO of Lopos. “Our solution works as a standalone solution; no gateway, server or other infrastructure is required, no personal data are logged.”

Lopos has ramped up production to meet market demand. The company has already received multiple large-scale orders over the last few weeks from companies active in a wide range of different sectors. The SafeDistance wearable is available starting 27th of May from €99 ($108) per device without recurring costs.
Safedistance Technology
The SafeDistance wearable is based on the Lopos ultra-wideband (UWB) technology that originated from R&D at imec and the Ghent University. This technology enables a safe, highly accurate (< 15cm error margin) distance measurement. When two wearables approach each other, the exact distance between the devices is measured and an alarm is activated when a minimum safety distance is not respected.

AkzoNobel is one of the companies that tested the SafeDistance wearable. “Our employees responded very positively to the effect of the Lopos SafeDistance wearable. It reminds them to respect the safe distance of 1.5 meters. We have seen an immediate impact of our employees’ interaction with each other and over 90 percent them are willing to continue to use the Lopos wearable,” said Stefaan De Block from AkzoNobel.

How It All Started?
Co-founder Subhasis Banerji suffered a near-fatal car accident in 1998 while in India. The accident left him with the brain and physical injuries, from which he took nearly 5 years to make a complete recovery. After doctors gave up on him within the first one year or so, Mr. Banerji started his own recovery journey using relaxation and movement techniques from his previous martial arts and yoga training. In 2007, he visited Singapore to do research on building a technology to help people with neurological and physical disabilities recover. There he met his co-founder Dr. John Heng and completed his Ph.D. on the SynPhNe system.
How It Works?
The SynPhNe device is very simple. It consists of 2 Gears—The HEAD GEAR which transmits EEG signals from the Brain, and the ARM GEAR which transmits EMG signals from the Muscle, thus making the brain and muscle work as one system.
How Is SynPhNe System Better Than Exoskeletons?
“Exoskeleton design is in its infancy from the mechanical engineering and control engineering aspect. At the moment, it seems to be an assistive device (patients can move while wearing the device) rather than a rehabilitative tool (patients become independent of the device and can move on their own),” Dr. Banerji told BiotechinAsia. “Exoskeletons add several variables to an already impaired arm or leg and do not as yet address the root of the disability problem – the subconscious tendency of human beings to first adapt towards compensation at brain and muscle levels rather than correction and re-learning. Huami Research Shows Wearables Can Predict New Trends Related To COVID-19
In a study published in the journal Discrete Dynamics in Nature and Society, Huami provided new clues for establishing a large-scale epidemic surveillance system, and helping improve the efficiency of public health monitoring and prediction. The research paper was titled “Learning from Large-Scale Wearable Device Data for Predicting Epidemics Trend of COVID-19.”

This study was supported by the Huami Corporation, a prediction model was established by using big data and artificial intelligence algorithms, which provides a new method for predicting epidemic trends for COVID-19, says a press release.
Researchers collected heart rate, physical activity, sleep, and other physiological data related to the above symptoms based on smart wearable devices. De-identified sensor data of about 1.3 million users who wore Huami devices from July 1, 2017, to April 8, 2020 were obtained according to appropriate security control. All the users were notified that their de-identified data could potentially be used for academic research.
Research found that, for every 1°C increase in human body temperature, heart rate increases by about 8.5 bpm. Based on this, the increase in heart rate caused by fevers related to COVID-19 or influenza-like diseases can be used as a starting point for a method to detect physiological abnormalities.
Huami researchers considered an individual’s resting heart rate at 1.5 standard deviations higher than the personal average for 5 consecutive days, and sleep duration not less than 0.5 standard deviations from the personal average as the criterion to determine an abnormality.
The prediction model’s analysis results show that in the listed cities of Wuhan, Beijing, Shenzhen, Hefei, and Nanjing, there was a clear outbreak period in the infection rate prediction curve for each city which corresponded to the epidemic’s outbreak in each city.
Taking Wuhan as an example, the infection rate predicted by the model peaked on January 28th, while the newly confirmed cases in Wuhan peaked at nearly 2,000 people on February 7. The predicted infection rate peak was 10 days earlier than the officially reported peak time.
Given the lag between COVID-19 infection and the emergence of symptoms and diagnosis, the model-derived results are also consistent with the results of a retrospective study on COVID-19 conducted by the Chinese Center for Disease Control.
Besides the academic research from Huami, Huami continued the efforts of Connect Health with Technology. The company has donated medical supplies and devices worth 11.5 million RMB during the coronavirus outbreak. Amazfit, a self-brand of Huami, started to working on a transparent N95 face mask called Amazfit AERI. The Innovative mask can clean itself and last for several weeks. For combating COVID-19, Huami also partnered with China National Clinical Research Center of Respiratory Disease (NCRCRD) and Guangdong Nanshan Medical Innovation Institute which led by Dr. Nanshan Zhong to build up a smart wearable joint laboratory.

The GN1 brings best-in-class auto-focusing with 100 million phase detection auto-focus (PDAF) agents. With all of the sensor’s active pixels working as auto-focusing agents, the GN1 can detect and focus onto a desired still or moving object from every corner in an instant, even in low-light conditions. When capturing images, a single-pixel output is created by merging the outputs from the two photodiodes within the pixel. Samsung also provides a software algorithm that takes light information from each photodiode to produce image resolutions comparable to 100Mp.
For ultimate low-light photography, the GN1 adopts Tetracell technology, a pixel-merging technique that improves the pixels’ capacity to capture and process more light. By binning four-pixel signals into one, Tetracell doubles the image sensor’s pixel size to 2.4μm and quadruples the light sensitivity to take brighter 12.5Mp photographs. With improved light sensitivity combined with a powerful auto-focusing solution, the GN1 is able to focus on an object quickly even in an extreme low-light environment to deliver both brighter and sharper results.

Astinno Receives $450K Innovate UK Grant For Further Testing of Its Femtech Wearable
Astinno, a London-based femtech hardware startup has received an innovate UK grant worth $450 thousand. The money will help Astinno further test its wearable for women experiencing a perimenopause symptom known as hot flushes.

The wearable, dubbed Grace, has sensors that can detect the onset of a hot flush, which include sweating, a rise in heart rate, shortness of breath and a reddening of the skin. The device then cools a women’s wrist to fight the reaction. The process is similar to running one’s wrist under a cold tap, reports TechCrunch.
Hot flashes are the most common symptom of menopause and perimenopause. More than two-thirds of North American women who are heading into menopause have hot flashes. If you lose too much body heat, you might feel chilled afterward. Night sweats are hot flashes that happen at night, and they may disrupt your sleep.
Current solutions to this problem include prescribed drugs or herbal remedies that often have bad side effects. Another solution is a manually operated device, but it can only be used once the hot flush has started. Grace is the first device to offer an automated option that predicts hot flush before it occurs. Automated cooling is especially useful for easing night flushes, as it allows the sufferer to sleep soundly instead of waking multiple times during the night.
According to founder Peter Astbury, the research team has built several prototypes of Grace to date. He says some limited user-testing has also been done. But they’ve yet to robustly prove the efficacy of the core tech — hence taking grant funding for more advanced testing.
Morgan IAT is Astinno’s commercial partner on the project. Both have been awarded the Innovate UK money via a publicly funded UK SMART grants scheme. Loughborough University – Astbury’s alma mater – is also involved as a research party, and is being funded for 100% of its grant costs.
“Several prototypes have been created so far, mainly by myself having received electronics and design training as part of my degree at Loughborough University,” says Astbury. “Shortly after leaving university I also briefly worked with an electronics company that helped to refine some of the components within the Grace product.

“Morgan IAT has the crucial technical role of developing a number of prototypes in conjunction with Astinno. This includes both hardware and software development, building many more advanced prototypes that are being tested, refined, and then tested again.

Purdue Researchers Develop Wearable That May Help Prevent Sudden Death From Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness. At least 3.4 million people in the U.S. live with seizures, including 470,000 children. Among these people, more than one-third are at risk of a deadly complication called Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). SUDEP is defined as the sudden and unexpected, non-traumatic, and non-drowning death of a person with epilepsy.

Now, Neurava, a spin-off of Purdue University is developing a wearable device to help stop this deadly condition. The device being developed by two Ph.D. students at Purdue’s College of Engineering are aimed at patients with refractory epilepsy, the type that puts them most at risk for SUDEP, reports Purdue University.
Neurava was co-founded by Jay Shah and Vivek Ganesh, graduate students in the lab of Pedro Irazoqui, the Reilly Professor of Biomedical Engineering and professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue.
“We want to provide a simple device that is easy to use and can save lives,” Ganesh said. “Our device monitors key biomarkers and then sends a wireless signal to a caregiver when it detects abnormalities typically linked to SUDEP.”
The founders of Neurava received a $20,000 award from Elevate Ventures, which will help with prototype development and market research. Elevate is a private venture development organization that supports the development and success of entrepreneurs across Indiana.
The co-founders of Neurava received entrepreneurial support from the Purdue Foundry and are working with the Purdue Research Foundation Office of Technology Commercialization to license the technology.
“Purdue continues to provide an amazing community of support for entrepreneurs and innovators who want to take their ideas and turn them into life-saving technologies,” Shah said.

EmbedTek’s PariRange Wearable Provides Peer-To-Peer Social Distancing And Contact Tracing
EmbedTek, an IoT company specializing in the design and manufacture of embedded computer systems, software, sensors, and integrated displays, announced that it has developed a peer-to-peer social distancing and contact tracking device. The device, called PariRange
, can be used by businesses to support the health and safety of its workforce without the concern for breach of privacy.

EmbedTek will be demonstrating PariRange to interested parties soon and will move into production in Q3 this year. The technology also can be an embedded design to fit ergonomically into protective equipment or work accessories such as a face shield, hardhat, ID badge, and wrist band. A provisional patent detailing the invention was submitted last week, reports BusinessWire.
PariRange collects and communicates data in a peer-to-peer fashion between each contact tracking device. It is an innovative breakthrough that solves multiple barriers other publicized contact tracking methods face:
- PariRange uses peer to peer communication methodology that does not require a network such as WiFi or cellular. It does not track an employee’s location, movements, or productivity throughout the day. It only tracks when one device comes into a set distance range of another device.
- It does not require any type of infrastructure in order to collect and recall information. So it can be used in work environments where there is no central WiFi network, such as farming and construction.
- Time of flight technology is used to accurately estimate the distance between two people within inches and does not rely on the signal strength of radio frequency which is a major improvement over Bluetooth alternatives.
Social distancing is proven to slow the spread of pathogens but is not completely effective because of its dependence on human behavior.
Businesses have to know who was in close contact with the infected employee while working, at lunch, or on break. EmbedTek’s proximity tracking system provides that information immediately to help protect others, prevent further infection, and maintain the operation of the facility.
“Businesses with large numbers of employees working in close contact with each other are in a difficult position,” said Dan Aicher, CEO of EmbedTek, LLC. “For food processors and manufacturers, for example, initial infections that were not contained have spread throughout facilities, endangering employees and shutting down essential portions of the supply chain.
