Mobile World Congress 2018 Barcelona: The Newest Wearables In a Glance!

The Mobile World Congress 2018 #MWC18 had its kick-off yesterday in Barcelona and it brings once again the most innovative and cutting-edge technologies in the mobile market. Needless to say, new wearable technologies have also been revealed in these past two days. Check out the latest company´s highlights and top products we have selected for you!

Looking for some trendy and disruptive solutions? Some of the Innovation World Cup finalists (and winners!!!!) made their way to Barcelona after being part of our WT | Wearable Technologies 2018 EUROPE and they will be presenting their ground-breaking products until this Thursday. By the way, the IOT/WT Innovation World Cup Pitch & Award Ceremony will take place today at ACCIO Brokerage Event* Stand CS20 (between Hall 4-5).

Don´t miss the chance to see these start-ups on stage and also to meet them in person at their booths: TRACKTICS (Hall 8.1 Swiss Pavilion), iBreve, MagnaSCI, HawaDawa, Beexlab, TipCrop, StethoMe, MyClose, Intellinium (Innovation City) and TrackNet.

Moreover, Wearable Technologies has spotted (just in time!) big trends that promise to be the new hit in the tech market:

AI Smart Wearable “VC-NX01”, by Onkyo, is the newest neckable AI-based solution unveiled this year. It provides the user with music, but the cool thing about it is that it automatically activates when placed around the neck. Also, the user will be able to customize their preferred assistant´s voice and geographical location. Be sure to check out our article on neckables by clicking here!

Vuzix (Booth CS80) and Tooz Technologies (Deutsche Telekom & Carl Zeiss) are also present in this year´s event! Learn more about their solutions and smart glasses by clicking here!

Digitalization & Connectivity are expected to be boosted with 5G services. DOCOMO will demonstrate this year use cases for its most recent 5G technology. One of the highlights will include a live demonstration of a humanoid robot, or “5G Robot”, that is able to mirror movements and complete tasks in real-time.

Payment with wearables promises to be the big next thing in IoT. Studies suggest that at least 175 million European are predicted to use contactless payment services options by 2020. Garmin smartwatch users that integrates Garmin Pay Technology can now download their CaixaBank Visa Card and effect direct and simple payments in Spain. Garmin Pay Technology is being currently implemented in its vĂvoactive® 3 device and is expected to be in more than 20 devices in the upcoming months.

CaixaBank was not the only bank that Visa has teamed up in these past weeks. The National Bank of Greece has also paired up with them in order to develop a new jewellery that will enable people to make secure payments with a tap at any contactless-enabled terminal. Hopefully these new rings and bracelets will be available in the market any time soon!

New smartwatches technologies are also being featured this year! Google announced today new specific tasks in Android application with its Google Assistant. Its actions are not available in 7 languages and will be able to better understand location-based questions from their Android smartwatches users.

Moreover, Tata Communications (digital infrastructure provider) and Omate (wearables maker) are working together to gear their new Omate x Nanoblock children´s smartwatch with safe, prompt and global connectivity. Don´t miss the opportunity to check their demo at Tata Communications´booth – Hall 2 H30.

And last but not least, ASU is displaying a prototype of their Cast One smartwatch. A watch that has an embedded projector, and allows its users to have information displayed can on the back of your hand – or just like a movie – on a nearby wall!

Beyond excited with these new products and trends? We also are! Be sure to stay tuned for more news on wearables technologies coming soon!

Lifestyle Changing Gadgets

Missed the January 1st to start new habits? If so, it is still not too late. Why waiting for 2019 if you can go for positive lifestyle changes right now? We know that old habits die hard, hence we have selected some new gadgets for you that will be keen to get rid of unhealthy choices as well as to improve your life. Check them out!

Did you know that tobacco up to half of its users? No exception. According to World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco kills over 7 million people on a yearly basis in the most gruesome ways, such as: lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary heart disease, among many others. If you feel like your time to quit cigarettes has come you should learn more about Smokebeat. Smokebeat, powered by Somatix, is a wearable body motion detector that can track if a smoker is smoking by looking for a specific movement pattern: hand-to-mouth gestures other than eating or drinking. Its detector and share features enable physicians to passively monitor the patient, give follow up on and enhance smoker adherence with tailored cessation treatments. Moreover, Smokebeat uses big data analysis and SERF™ (Social, Emotional, Rational and Financial) motivation engine to deliver different combinations of tailored CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy). According to Eran Ofir – CEO of Somatix –, when smokers are exposed to their own smoking statistics they tend to lower significantly their smoking volume.

Lack of sleep can lead to surprisingly severe effects other than fatigue. Weight gaining and even mental health issues (e.g. bipolar disorder and schizophrenia) are also linked to sleep deprivation. With RestOn you can now monitor your whole sleep throughout the night. RestOn is a non-wearable strip-like gadget that can be placed under your bedsheet and measures different sleeping patters such as body movement and breathing & heart rates. Besides that, RestOn can also keep a comprehensive score of your sleep as sleep time and duration, number of times waking up and/or turning over and leaving the bed. These when analyzed can provide the user with important information about their actual sleep quality.

Low back pain is one of the most common complaints associated with poor posture. Nonetheless, neck, arms and shoulders are also areas that can be highly affected by postural dysfunction – thus causing fatigue, numbness and pain. FitNeck is proven to correct poor posture by strengthening specific stabilizer muscles in your neck and realigning your head back over your body. The device was designed in cooperation with doctors and chiropractors and is the only home device that assists in performing cervical retraction. FitNeck was funded by Indiegogo last November and started its shipping in December – the device has two-year warranty.

There are over 90,000 deaths from alcohol-related causes every year in the US. From alcohol poisoning deaths, car accidents, accidental drowning, to liver disease and chronic pancreatitis – among many others. If you were able to keep track of the amount of alcohol you have been consuming, would you do it? PROOF™ is a sleek wrist band wearable that uses disposable cartridges to track blood alcohol content (BAC) levels through your skin. Alcohol molecules pass through your skin when you drink and PROOF´s technology converts these alcohol molecules into electric signals that can be measure by their application. The bracelet is embedded with LED lights that will be flashed once you have reached your individual limit, alerting you that it is time to stop. Herein, it is important to stress out that drinking and driving is NEVER a smart idea. Nonetheless, keeping real track of your actual alcohol consumption can be considered as a turning point when deciding to adopt a new lifestyle.

Check also our article on wearables that can measure your BAC levels here!

2018 Promises to Be the Year for Smart Glasses!

It´s been 5 years since Google Glass was released in the market. Time flies, right? Since then we have stumbled upon some attempts in the smart glasses market – these somehow only had their heyday for a short-period. Anyhow, 2018 promises to be the year for smart glasses! Big names have been investing in this not so new market and their new products will have a great deal of influence on how we perceive these glasses.

Deutsche Telekom and Carl Zeiss have paired up and created Tooz Technologies, a smart glasses joint venture in which each company holds a 50 % stake. This partnership couldn´t have been any better since Carl Zeiss will provide their optical AR technology whilst Deutsche Telekom will be responsible for connectivity services. Tooz Technologies will aim at a broad variety of customer with its products and their solutions are expected to be marketed to both consumers as well as enterprise clients. According to Dr. Ulrich Simons – Head of the Corporate Research and Technology at Zeiss –, the  goal is to develop glasses that can be light and design-acceptable to the industry and consumers. Namely, unobtrusive glasses that bring value and can be carried along on a daily basis.

Vaunt smart glasses, powered by Intel, have been another recent exciting release. They look like normal eyeglasses and don’t have a camera embedded, nor a glowing LCD screen or buttons. Intel´s Vaunt glasses were designed with a light plastic frame and could possibly be mistaken by a normal pair of Wayfarers. Nonetheless, these smart glasses hide something on the inside: two little modules built into the stems of the eyeglasses. These modules can project pictures directly onto the wearers Iris! The first-gen models will be controlled by simple gestures as nodding your head. Vaunt smart glasses are still in beta and there is no concrete prevision when it will come to the market.

But there is not only news for consumers on the glasses market also professional users can look forward to some new releases!

Vuzix Blade™, by Vuzix, is an augmented reality smart glasses that provide the user with a smart display with a see-through viewing experience. Vuzix has other types of smart glasses launched in the market, such as Vuzix M300 and Vuzix M100 which focused more on industrial and enterprise. Vuzix Blade is the company’s try to delight the general public with its discrete design and tempting features. The wearer can access information such as mapping directions, weather information, restaurants ratings, alerts and many more without checking your smartphone. Furthermore, the smart glasses are paired with Android, iOS, and Wi-Fi. Vuzix announced earlier this month that their Blade smart glasses now have Alexa Amazon integration and according to Alex Kelly – Vuzix´s Director of Innovation & Strategic Partnerships – Alexa-enabled technologies will allow users not only to see the digital world but also to communicate with it hands-free, at any-time.

VPS 16 glasses from Viewpoint are embedded with stereoscopic cameras in the nose bridge that enables the tracking of spatial vision. Namely, the spatial plane can be precisely determined by the user. VPS 16 is equipped with 4 cameras that support different customer in different situations e.g. enhancing the visibility of road signs, supporting surgeons executing operations as well as improving athletes´ performance. Moreover, the technology behind VPS 16 allows real-time streaming of video and eye coordinates to any kind of mobiles such as laptop, tablet or smartphone. The smart glasses weigh 41-gramme, which can be the perfect fit for an everyday wear once its weight doesn´t leave the user any pressure sores.

Eager for more? You can meet Viewpoint in person at our next WT | Wearable Technologies Conference 2018 USA in San Francisco that will take place on 11th and 12th of July. Check out our 2017´s conference program and stay tuned for more updates coming soon!! You can pre-register here.

February: The American Heart Month

The numbers are alarming. According to World Health Organization (WHO), over 177.00 million people die every year from cardio vascular diseases – basically 30% of all deaths worldwide. Heart related diseases rise steadily with age, yet younger adults are becoming more and more inclined to be at risk earlier in life. One of the main reasons for that is the high rates of obesity that have been increasing year after year. Also, high blood pressure patients are also proved to be a risk group for CVD´s.

February is the American Heart Month and we would like to raise awareness about this topic and well as to share the latest wearables and technologies that will support you in keeping good track of your heart´s health!

Scientists of the University of Tokyo have developed a second skin that is able to perform heart scans – something that is only available at hospitals. The elastic material can be stuck onto the body and is embedded with an integrated sensor system, which can wirelessly record and transmit the patient’s biometric data to a smartphone in real-time. Moreover, its breathable material with LEDs and stretchable wiring on a rubber sheet can be the best option for elderly people since it lighter and provokes less skin irritation. According to one of the developers, Professor Someya, this wearable is expected to reach the market in 2021 and will change the way we see care home systems.

The Northwestern University has paired up with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in order to create a new type of stretchable electronic. This can be used in advanced medical care and by patients who are going through stroke rehabilitation. Herein, it is valid to mention that cardio vascular disease may harden the blood flow through the arteries – thereafter, causing the patient a heart attack or a stroke. Nonetheless, the new bandage throat sensor can capture the patient´s swallowing ability as well as his patterns of speech by measuring vibrations of the vocal cords. According to John Rogers – Engineering Professor at the Northwestern University –, these features are keen when diagnosing and treating aphasia (a communication disorder associated with stroke). Whenever patients are underperforming, clinicians will be alerted. Also, the data collected by the sensors can be displayed in a dashboard, thus facilitating analysis for both patients and clinicians.

Vital Scout, VivaLnk, is a wireless wearable patch that makes use of ECG sensors to gather Heart Rate (HR) and Respiratory Rate (RR) data with medical-grade accuracy. Its specialized algorithms enable Vital Scout to monitor physical activity, as well as stress levels and sleep quality. The wearable works like a band-aid that can be worn over the heart with electro-gel adhesives, so that users can keep up with their routine without a hassle. Its battery lasts up to 72 hours and provides the wearer with continuous monitoring and biometric feedback in real-time. One can keep track of their health status by checking the Vital Scout app, that provides the patient and physician with clear and detailed data.

Physicists at the University of Sussex designed a new kind of wearable technology: liquid-based sensors. This new technology contains graphene, a sensitive (yet strong), flexible and conductive material that is able to track vital information wirelessly, such as respiration and heart rates. Professor Alan Dalton adds that the sensor has a great potential to early detect life-threatening symptoms as cardiac arrhythmia and sleep apnoea. Moreover, graphene is an affordable material, which means that this future product will be accessible to many people.

So far as one can tell, the wearable heart device industry is driving a strong trend of R&D investments and we can´t hardly wait for the new products that are going to be the next blow in the market! Stay tuned for more news and market trends coming soon!

Wearables in the Military Force

Wearable technologies have been evolving in the most unexpected fields, yet whenever we think about wearables the first fields that come to our minds are healthcare, fitness, lifestyle and similar areas, right?  Did you know that wearables in the military force is a sector that entails an enormous load of wearable novelties since the 80´s? Moreover – as reported by Questale – its sales is expected to grow by 45% until 2022. Still, the question here is not to decide whether it will bring more goods or harms, since this discussion can get pretty tricky depending on beliefs and conviction. What we aim with this article is to enlighten our readers on how the military scenario and the soldiers of the future might look like in the upcoming years.

Curious? Then be sure to keep reading it!

According to recent studies, wearable technologies will enable soldiers to either track and be tracked in real-time and great precision – which will ensure the safety of these soldiers as well as to diminish risk of failure in high-risked operations. In this respect, developing technologies that are discreet and can be carried along the soldier can be a life changer.

Norinco, a Chinese enterprise, is now developing a new generation of military exoskeletons. These will enable soldiers to carry over 100kg of supplies without much struggle since the soldier would have its strength powered up. Yet, this exoskeleton is not based on any surreal Terminator movie. In our past WT | Wearable Technologies Conference 2018 EUROPE, Ekso Bionics presented on stage an exoskeleton for industrial applications that supports workers to achieve physical movements, which were thought to be unachievable.

A system called Arielle, by ST Engineering, has been combining elements such as helmets embedded with smart-glasses, smart-clothing, bracelets, different sensors, cameras, smartwatches, you name it. These gears will change the daily-life of thousands of soldiers when it comes to: providing soldiers with AR images that will ease communication and coordinate tracking, body temperature tracking, long-lasting batteries for the most various devices, notifying colleagues with the probability of armed conflicts as well as day-night vision.

However, it is important to point out that when it comes to military every possible data generated by these gears is extremely sensitive. Companies and developers have to be positive that their technologies are safeguarded so that the soldiers will not have their identities revealed nor spotted by the general public.

In a nutshell, these wearables are not completely estranged from the wearables we are used to see on our daily-basis. We are simply not used to seeing them on our way to work or anywhere. Mostly important here is: they are out there and have been used as inspiration for many types of wearables that are familiar to many of us. Once we have more reports and news about the military wearables we will keep you posted since they have a great potential of shaping our current technologies and how we know it. In the meantime, stay tuned for more news!

Ralph Lauren specially designed a self-heating jacket for the TEAM USA athletes. Ralph Lauren´s jacket works almost like an electric blanket and its mechanism was developed exclusively for Ralph Lauren. The heating system is made from electronic printed conductive inks (in the shape of the American flag) that conducts heat and connects to a small battery pack sewn to the interior of the jackets. Moreover, the printed conductive inks are flexible and stretchable, which will allow the American athletes to perform all kinds of motion while protected from the low temperatures (until 20 below zero). This wearable is water-repellent and its battery lasts up to 11 hours.

The Halo Sport neurostimulation headset, by Halo Neuroscience, looks like normal headphones – however, its features are way beyond its design and presentation. The headset can be connected to a paired mobile application that promotes brain elasticity and development of muscle memory. According to Halo Sport, their device is the perfect choice for athletes who want to improve their training and practice. Furthermore, by optimizing your motor cortex your muscles can perform better in many ways, such as: motor skills, endurance and strength!

SmartSuit, by Samsung, is the perfect wearable for skaters who want to boost their skating performance. The gear will allow the user to track their body position metrics that will be analyzed in real-time by a coach within the accompanying application. Additionally, the suit makes use of 5 embedded sensors that measures body posture and calculates how far a skater´s hips are from the ice. If the athlete isn’t bended at an optimal level a vibration reminder will be to the skater so that he or she can correct their posture in order to avoid future injuries.

Other than sport wearables, the 2018 Olympic Winter Games is also featuring mobile payment wearables gears! Visa in cooperation with Lotte Card have developed three types of devices that will smooth the way payments are being done throughout the whole event. These come as gloves, a commemorative sticker and an Olympic pin. The question now is whether these products will sustain the momentum for other events or even become part of our routine?

In a nutshell, it is interesting to see how the winter sports wearables have been booming the market with its innovative technologies and solutions. Let´s hope that these cutting-edge gadgets will influence the upcoming new technologies that will be part of our daily lives. In the meantime – while we keep on waiting – be sure to follow all the competitions and cheer for your favorite teams and athletes!

Overcome Pain With These Ingenious Technologies!

The opioid crisis brought to light a very delicate topic: millions of people are shattered by chronic pain every year. Opioid medications are extremely addictive and can lead patients to the use of other pain relief drugs, such as heroin. In the US, for example, over 20 million people are struggling from addiction. The question is: are there non-pharmacological solutions that have the potential to support patients in managing their pain?

Yes! Enter the wearable movement and learn more about the gadgets that will assist you in reducing your pain! We have selected some of the newest releases in the market, check them out:

Oska Pulse, by Oska Wellness, is a safe and handy product that will help you reduce muscle stiffness, relieve pain as well as to increase your mobility in case you suffer of chronic pain. Moreover, its pulsed electromagnetic field technology (PEMT) aids blood vessels dilatation, which will result in increased blood flow and reduced inflammation – releasing the body´s natural endorphins. Using Oska Pulse is easy, all you have to do is to place it on your knees, arms – or wherever you have the injury – and let its electrical signals promote recovery. According to Dr. Joseph Shurman (Chairman of Pain Management and Co-Chair Palliative Care Scripps Memorial Hospital), at least 70% of his patients who have been using Oska Pulse found relief for their pain.

Price: $399.00

iTENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation and has been prescribed by physicians as an effective way to reduce or even eliminate pain. iTENS devices work by sending small electrical signals through the skin to intercept pain signals from reaching the brain, and help release endorphins, the body’s natural pain-fighting chemical. The devices are a medical grade and FDA-cleared and lithium-ion battery provides over 24 hours of use on a single charge. Furthermore, the peel and stick gel pads are reusable and replaceable for multiple applications, which will give you the freedom to wear it at any time or place!

You can buy it here! Price: €99.16

iReliev® TENS, by iReliev, is a therapy that uses low-voltage electrical currents for pain relief. It has different settings that will allow you to properly control the intensity of stimulation by controlling the voltage, current and pulse width or duration of each pulse. iReliev® TENS can be placed directly on the skin and the electrical impulses delivered by the system will travel directly to the nerves – which will naturally inhibit the transmissions of pain signals to the brain. It is the perfect solution for people recovering from surgeries, athletes that suffer from muscle injuries and – naturally – chronic pain patients.

You can buy it here! Price: €85.13

ActiPatch® is a clinically proven drug free device in the fight against chronic muscle & joint pain. Its technology provides patients with long-lasting pain relief and the best part is: there are no side-effects! Which means, you will not have to face any rough sensation (i.e. heat and extreme vibration). Pretty convenient, right? Moreover, ActiPatch® relieves different types of pain, such as: muscle and joint soreness, strains and sprains, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and more!

You can buy it here! Price: €30.25

Other than dealing with addiction, pain management wearables can also empower your pain management tracking. That is, you and your physician can now better monitor your current status in real-time with precise and detailed information! Stay tuned for more!
