New Smartwatches hitting Baselword 2017

The biggest and most important watch fair in the world is taking place as every other year in Basel. This time besides “new” versions of watches that were already presented at last year’s show we also found some interesting facts like Swarovski postponing the presentation of its first own smartwatch. In the past, they teamed up with Samsung for the Gear S or with Huawei for the Watch Jewel among others to present some of their pieces. This time they got us all excited after the announcement of their smartwatch at CES 2017to be presented at Baselworld, but only 2months later they announced their plans to postpone the launching stating that they were not ready yet.

Diesel (one of the Fossil brands who also unveiled more watches such as Q Venture and Q Explorer joined the smartwatch race with their first smartwatch, the Diesel On, an Android Wear 2.0 watch that comes with some special features such as a cracked-screen effect that increases as more notifications come through, and a building fog that covers the screen when you’re not active.

Movado Connect is also a new Android Wear watch that will come with a variety of “faces” hitting the market later this year.

Michael Kors came to Baselworld to present a few new smartwatches, Access Grayson for men, Access Sofie for women and Access Hybrid. These watches come with an AMOLED touchscreen display, Android Wear 2.0 and stylish looks plus you will be able to use an Instagram image as your watch face for a totally unique look.

Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45 was not really launched during Baselworld but all the looks were on them. The Modular 45 is the follow-up to the original 2016 Connected. It’s also compatible with analog watch faces, so if you’re bored of the connected experience, you can disconnect.

Another fashion brand launching a smartwatch was Hugo Boss with the Touch which will offer NFC.  Also Tommy Hilfiger with a watch name that you will “easily” remember…the TH24/7You in line with the fashion brand. The TH24/7You is cheaper than the Touch, at $299, although it lacks NFC. They both do run Android Wear 2.0.

To continue with fashion brands launching smartwatches…..Emporio Armani Connected, This is the first Emporio Armani Connected Android Wear smartwatch. Armani Exchange entered the wearables market with Armani Exchange Connected, a collection of hybrid smartwatches.

We see as a pattern that every year more and more fashion brands are joining the crowd smartwatch market. In the near future, we will all own a smartwatch? Will the brands go down with the prices? Is it already my analog watch a vintage piece? Only the future will tell, or Fossil if it keeps unveiling more and more watches for its several brands such as Michael Kors, Diesel, Misfit, Emporio Armani, Skagen, Michele or Kate Spade…brands that in a mere coincidence also unveiled new pieces of smartwatches at Baselworld this year…

Giving Women a Way to Keep Tabs on Their Own Health – Interview with WTUS17 Speaker Celesstia Health

On July 25-26 the WT | Wearable Technologies Conference will be back in San Francisco. Many highlights will be awaiting you. Among them New York based company Celesstia Health. Their CEO Peter Mankowski will be on stage on July 26. Read our interview with Jessica Roberts – the “Geek girl” who started it all.

What’s the story behind Celesstia? Where is the idea coming from?

In late 2014, one of our co-founders lost his mother to Metastatic breast cancer. Driven by the grief of the loss of his mother and the desire to improve on diagnosis, accuracy & time, Louri got in touch with some of his former Blackberry co-workers. Together, this new team of scientists well versed in human and animal medical applications, and individuals from many other female-driven industries developed Celesstia. The mission? Give women a way to keep tabs on their own health and be alerted to any changes that could be cancerous.

How will the wearable component of Celesstia look like?

When thinking about the design for the Celesstia product we initially wanted to create a ‘Smart Bra’. When we started looking deeper into how many different types of bras are on the market, it became clear that we would never be able product line vast enough to suit each individual women’s preference. Thus, we created a solution designed to work comfortably underneath women’s existing bras. The Celesstia wearable consists of 2 thin silicone inserts that come in a variety of sizes (A-DD) and available in clear or nude to be worn discreetly and super comfortably with all electronics embedded in the silicone.

How can Celesstia help in the therapy and treatment of breast cancer?

One in eight women will get breast cancer, and approximately 40,000 women a year die from it in the U.S. — but up to tens of thousands of others will have false positives or be treated unnecessarily for lower-risk cancers. For women with dense breasts, mammograms not only expose the patient to radiation but are also fairly inaccurate at distinguishing between normal white cells and white cancerous cells.

In order to overcome some of these shortfalls of modern technology, we have created Celesstia to become a habit-forming product among at risk or recovering women. We wanted to give women a solution to make them familiar with their bodies in a way that is as simple and routine as putting on your socks in the morning. Celesstia, uses AI to learn regular biometric patterns in the patient’s body and sends an alert if there is any unusual activity detected. Meaning that using Celesstia doesn’t expose the patient’s body to any radiation, or painful tests.

What is your favorite Wearable product at the moment besides your own?

The Muse headband. Muse first grabbed our attention in 2015, when we first discovered them doing something that seemed very out of the ordinary. Instead of simply tracking what is happening in your body, communicate with your body and essentially change your stress and thought process. Celesstia, is a similar concept, but instead allows your body to communicate with you and give you alerts about changes that could be cancerous.

Can a high-tech ski cap read my mind or tell me when I’m sick?

On this live episode of Too Embarrassed to Ask, Opnwatr CEO Mary Lou Jepsen says it’s not as crazy as it sounds.

Are you ready for wearable technology that can read you mind? It’s not as crazy as it sounds, entrepreneur Mary Lou Jepsen says.

Jepsen — the cofounder of One Laptop Per Child and a former executive at Google X and Facebook’s Oculus — is now the CEO of a company called Opnwatr, which she says is simultaneously making a “wearable MRI system” and “work[ing] on telepathy.” And those aren’t two separate products.

“If I throw you into an MRI machine right now, I can tell you what words you’re about to say,” Jepsen said on the latest episode of Too Embarrassed to Ask, which was recorded in front of a live audience at South By Southwest. “I can tell you what images are in your head. I can tell what music you’re thinking of. I can tell if you’re listening to me or not. That’s possible with an MRI, now.”

Opnwatr’s vision for the future is a wearable device like a ski cap or a shirt that can analyze things ranging from your thoughts to your health. And the possibilities — which Jepsen readily acknowledges could be both empowering and frightening — don’t stop there, she said.

You can listen to the new podcast on iTunes, Google Play Music, TuneIn, Stitcher and SoundCloud.

“If you have a thought of how to make a better object, you can just think it and it appears,” Jepsen said of the ski cap idea. “And then you can melt it down and make a new one.”

“Our brains are way, way more complex than any computer we know how to make,” she added. “They’re way more creative. The input’s pretty good, but the output is constrained by our tongues and jaws moving and us typing. If we could communicate at the speed of thought, we can augment our creativity with the low-level stuff that AI and robots and 3-D printers and fab labs and all that do.”

But there are, of course, major privacy implications to new technology like this. Jepsen said the world needs an “international bill of rights” to govern the rights of individuals before products like a wearable MRI cap become commonplace.

“Can the police make you wear it?” she asked. “Can the military make you wear it? Who owns your thoughts? Once you share them, can you delete them? What about filtering? Have you ever thought about something you didn’t want to say out loud? We have to make it so that it only works when we want to think into it.”

Fighting Migraines

Migraines are pulsating headaches, often on one side of the head. Physical activity may intensify the pain, but symptoms can vary from person to person and from one attack to the next. Three times as many women as men have them so I guess we are the lucky ones.

Some people with a migraine experience aura. The most common auras are visual, such as flickering lights, spots, or lines.  Auras typically last between five minutes and an hour, with a 60-minute “skip phase” before the headache pain sets in, she says. Some patients have auras without a migraine-type headache or any headache at all. Waking up tired or having trouble falling asleep are common problems in people with migraines. What do these all symptoms mean? People who suffer from severe migraines could tell you that continue with your normal daily life is hard. Normal things such as going to work, exercise or simply cooking become impossible tasks. Now those times are over!

Theranica Bio-Electronics is developing the Nerivio Migra, a disposable neuromodulation patch designed to treat migraine headaches. The “smart” patch is designed to be applied at the onset of a migraine attack, to provide “rapid and significant pain relief.” Theranica patches (as well as other wearables in plan) are made of a single unit which is comprised of electrodes; a safe, low-powered battery; and a smart chip, developed and designed by the company. This chip is responsible not only for the creation of ENS/NMES pulses per the user’s definitions but it incorporates smart features like therapy efficiency control and safety mechanism. It utilizes Electronic Nerve Stimulation and/or neuromuscular electrical stimulation in conjunction with wireless communications technology – using each individual’s smartphone as the ENS/NMES devices, avoiding the need for additional wired electronic device. Using smartphone as an advanced ENS/NMES device enables the users to activate and control Theranica’s wearables over Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE), but also opens up the connection and access to the Internet.

Another drug-free migraine pain relief solution is Cefaly.  It is FDA approved certified medical device designed to treat and prevent migraine headaches. Cefaly is the first cranial analgesic electrotherapeutic device to acquire ISO medical certification proven effective on migraine pain with no side effects. Most headaches and migraines involve the trigeminal nerve. Its superior branch ends at the exit of the eye socket, underneath the skin of the forehead. An adhesive electrode is positioned on the forehead and Cefaly connects to this. Through the electrode, Cefaly generates precise micro-impulses in order to stimulate the nerve endings of the trigeminal nerve. Neurostimulation of the trigeminal nerve with Cefaly® produces a relaxing effect. Regular repetition of this relaxing effect helps reduce the number of attacks of headache and migraine.

Last but not least we have VITOS . The focus of migraine therapy with VITOS is the activation of the parasympathetic part of the vegetative nervous system. This part of the nervous system is always active when we recover or rest – it is responsible for cell regeneration and metabolic processes. The stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system thus initiates the necessary regeneration processes of inflammatory areas and acts as a recovery accelerator. Neurostimulation with VITOS is used both as a migraine prophylaxis and as an acute attack.

Migraines are normally treated with medication which can lead to side effects from the use of it and the person becoming depend on pain killers. The solutions above are drug- free pain relief devices with no side effects that will help you to continue with your daily life even when suffering from a migraine.

“Smart” has caché

I admit it. I was drawn to advanced textiles because of “e-textiles.” That was the only kind of smart textile yet developed, at least that I knew about. I’ve since learned that there are many kinds of advanced textiles with “whiz-bang” appeal. In fact, just about every day I hear of a new technology, fiber or fabric; a new prototype; or a new application that uses a high-tech fabric in a completely novel way.

In the years since we launched this publication, we’ve covered a wonderful variety of developments in smart textiles, including:

  • Clothes that can sense when another person is looking at the wearer and move in response
  • Fabrics that can monitor vital signs and send the information virtually anywhere via a smartphone app. There are a growing variety of these products, reflecting consumer interest in self-health care.
  • Clothes that regulate the wearer’s temperature
  • Fabrics that change color to indicate the presence of infection in wound dressings
  • A smart fabric that mimics bone tissue
  • A smart fabric that imitates human muscle
  • Self-powered textiles that could be made into smart clothes

And if I keep this up, this bulleted list will run into several pages! (Search “smart” on this site and you’ll see what I mean.)

One of the reasons the pace of innovation is so impressive is that innovators, including educational and research institutions, government agencies and industry, are banding together to collaborate for the benefit of all, and these joint efforts are having a meaningful impact. Examples from around the globe are noted in our feature, “Better together” by smart textiles expert Marie O’Mahony.

Honestly, the willingness of researchers to share their findings and work together amazes me – and advanced textiles are a stronger, more cohesive industry for it. Of course there are proprietary technologies and products, and the competition is not for the faint-hearted. But so many “firsts” are the result of collaboration.

Mahoney’s article is a great place to start with an overview and an update, but I hope you cruise through some of the other articles about smart fabric technologies and products that are available to you on this site. I think you’ll be dazzled, too.

Interview with Greg Gallagher – founder of Snuza

“The alarm went off this morning around 5 am to let me know that my daughter had not taken a breath in 20+ seconds, I was able to wake her and she started breathing again”. This is a story of one of many parents that have experienced the benefits of using Snuza. We are very excited to have this South African baby monitoring company as one of our exhibitors at this year´s MEDICA. Please read a short interview with Greg Gallagher – a founder of the company who told us a bit more about Snuza.

1) What is Snuza and what sets it apart from other baby monitors out their today?

Snuza is an ISO 13485 certified company that produces a range of baby breathing monitors. We have developed the world’s first portable baby breathing monitor fully certified as a Class IIb Medical Device (93/42/EEC – 2007/47/EEC). It has the advantage of being small, battery powered, totally portable and easily attached, meaning parents are now able to monitor their babies wherever they may fall asleep. This has a major advantage over the under-mattress type monitors which are bulky, mains powered and have to be installed under a baby’s mattress, limiting their use to the crib and making it inconvenient to travel with the baby

2) You will be exhibiting with us at Medica 2017 where people will be able to check out your products live! What kind of partners is your company currently looking for?

We would be looking for distribution partners within the medical sector in Europe.

3) Around baby products there are always a lot of safety concerns. How are you addressing these concerns and make sure your products are completely save for the use with little humans?

We have many years of experience in high quality product design and all our designs are conducted with safety at the top of the priority list. This is evident in our meeting and exceeding the extremely stringent standards required by the European Medical Devices Directives, which are especially high for Class IIb devices. Our company culture also promotes high moral values, emphasising accountability, quality and responsibility, all which permeate through to the design culture.

4) Besides your own what is currently your favorite wearable device and why?

Apple Watch. It provides the most basic tools (tells the time) and some very useful tools (eg HR monitoring, voice-to-text messaging, etc) which are natively integrated into the iOS platform.

This is why we shouldn’t make ‘Minority Report’ computers

In this viral video, CollegeHumor lays out a pretty good case.

The computers in science fiction movies like “Minority Report” are designed to look cool on film. But maybe we shouldn’t be making real computers that work that way.

Let CollegeHumor explain:

Although the actual design of the computer here is imaginary, real companies taking cues from sci-fi is very real. As I wrote two years ago, “Minority Report,” “The Matrix” and “Ready Player One” are frequently referenced in VR and AR circles.

And a sect of true AR believers already does its typing without a screen and keyboard, via wearable keyboard gloves that talk to head-mounted displays.

Personally, I’ll stick with my iPhone for now.
