Neurotechnology To Unlock Human Potential: Interview with Halo Neuroscience CEO, Dr. Daniel Chao

Are you using your body, mind and energy to full potential? How do you know without deeper data? These are questions that drives the work at Halo Neuroscience. They are based in San Francisco, and will step to the Main Stage at WT | Wearable Technologies Conference 2016 USA, July 12-13th at Fort Mason Center.

  1.       Can you explain what Halo Neuroscience is and what your product is?

Halo Neuroscience develops neurotechnology to unlock human potential in both the healthy and impaired.

Our first product, Halo Sport, launched in February 2016. Athletes pair Halo Sport with athletic  training to accelerate gains in skill, strength, and explosiveness. Halo Sport works via a process called Neuropriming — by stimulating the brain’s motor cortex just prior to or during a workout, the training session becomes more productive for the brain.

  1.       What is “Neuropriming” and how does it work?

In order to understand Neuropriming, it’s important to first understand a fundamental capability of the human brain called neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is our brain’s innate ability to adapt to training and practice; it’s how we learn new skills — from foreign languages to math, directions to the nearest cafe, and, for an athlete, physical movement and strength.

Neuropriming, then, is the use of neurostimulation to facilitate neuroplasticity in our brain so that it responds better to training. In a nutshell, Neuropriming allows practice to be more productive  for the brain just like a pre-work meal makes weight lifting more productive for the muscles.

Our first application for Neuropriming is athletic training. By using Halo Sport to deliver neurostimulation to “prime” the brain for an athletic training session, our athletes stand to gain more neurologically from their workouts.

  1.       What are the ideal situations for using Halo?

The brain’s motor cortex governs muscle skill, explosiveness, and endurance. Thus, Halo Sport works best when paired with athletic training focused on improving in any of these areas, whether it’s practicing a jump shot, weight lifting, track workouts, or cycling on a trainer.

Halo is generally best not used during rest or recovery days. Rather, Neuropriming should be reserved for “deep practice” days, i.e., those sessions where the athlete plans for a high volume of quality/thoughtful reps.

Halo is live with elite athletic organizations and athletes across the country. For example the U.S. Military, U.S. Olympic Teams, and teams and athletes from the MLB, NBA, and NFL are all currently using Halo Sport. This video demonstrates how the U.S. Ski Team uses Halo Sport, and the science behind the device.

  1.       How long were you working on this product? How long has it been on the market?

Halo Neuroscience was founded in 2013 and is based in San Francisco, California. My cofounder (Brett Wingeier) and I didn’t think about product once during the first year of operation. During those 12 months, we set out to build a unique neurostimulation device—the most advanced of its kind—that would allow us to more thoroughly explore the field of brain stimulation, and use the device in rigorous scientific testing.

After testing 1000 subjects, the data from studies on motor skill and strength consistently yielded impressive and reproducible results — not just in untrained volunteers, but also in highly trained competitive athletes. These results lead to the development of Halo Sport, which was announced to the public in February 2016. Devices will ship in the fall to consumers.

  1.       You will join the WT | Market at WTUS16 in a few weeks. What are you excited about in terms of the conference?

I am especially excited to meet and network with like-minded people, and to be able to contribute to the growing wearable industry, especially in the growing new subcategory in the field – active wearables. I’m also looking forward to the keynote from Russell Okung, offensive tackle for the Denver Broncos. I went to UCBerkeley, and loved seeing former Cal Bears running back Marshawn Lynch thrive behind the holes opened up by Russell and his teammates on that dominate Seattle offensive line.

  1.       What is your favorite wearable and why?

Well, up until a few months ago, my heart rate monitor. My favorite sport is cycling, and I love being able to track my progress during long rides.
Now, of course, Halo Sport! I’m very proud of the device my team and I have built, as it represents all of the fun (and hard) work we’ve put in over the last few years.

Join the Global WT | Network in the beautiful Bay Area this summer.

The New Wave of Wearables is Transforming The World of Soccer

Wow! Since the kick off of the European Championships (UEFA) in France, summer 2016 seems to be extremely hot.. Every four years, the national teams of Europe come together to fight for the championships. But it’s not all about European soccer this summer, the heat is fast spreading to America with COPA America. Soccer is intensely expected and highly competitive. How does an athlete train to reach their peak performance, and remain in good condition throughout the championships?
One answer is taking from the benefits sensors inside of wearable technology. As you may know, this allows for improvement of performance for both individuals and teams. The story of the Champion German National Team 2 years ago is still the great inspiration for technological assistance in coaching soccer. Last year FIFA announced the creation of a standard wearable device for world Soccer. Let WT| Wearable Technologies reveals you some secret devices.

Viper Pod
Viper Pod is the world’s leading performance monitoring tool for football. It includes building sensors into clothes that players can wear on the training ground or even in matches. Moreover, Viper Pod is packed with a GPS module, a series of motion sensors and a heart rate receiver. Therefore, it is able to monitor valuable metrics such as distance, speed, acceleration, step balance and heart rate. It can also report collisions and give players a fatigue index.

Dash
Dash is a tiny sport wearable sensor that improves your skills by measuring every move. The Dash wearable sensor provides instant data regarding speed during the game, distance covered and heart rate. Besides the key performance data, Dash stands out by taking control the game through it’s connected app. The Dash app interfaces with the sensor take the data and displays it in a playful manner on leader boards and score charts. However, the Dash team reveals there is much more to come.

Qualcomm Smart Legging
Qualcomm just entered wearable sector with the announcement of smart legging for Soccer in Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016. For this project, Qualcomm co-operated with AiQ Smart Clothing – a long time attendee for WT | Wearable Technologies Conferences. The leggings are built with 5 sensors strategically positioning at knee, ankle and base of the spine of the clothing. It tracks the postures and positioning at the pitch while playing. And then, the players’ data will be sent to a Smartphone to coaches via Bluetooth. Moreover, the smart leggings enable to measure vital biometric data, for example, heart rate and respiration.

Inside Coach
InsideCoach has an idea of turning the ball into smart one which is the perfect training tool for players or coaches. The smart ball contains motion detection technology that records force of impact, spin, position, trajectory, number of ball passes, number of ball touches and play time. After that, the data will be sent directly to mobiles in real time. Thus, players can be their own coach on the field.

Sport vest
GPSports’ Vest as known as “the man bra” is an activity tracking shirt from GPSports. Yes, it is not a new idea of a smart shirt that can track activity in sport. However, this shirt shocks us all because of its mass tracking with one wearable. GPSports’ Vest can track around 150 football teams and their performance. The smart vest has a built –in slot which is designed for GPS enabled High Performance Unit. On another hand, it enables heart rate monitoring, chest strap and accelerometer. All the data (heart rate, speed, density) is instantly uploaded to GPS software.

Wearable Experiments
Last but not least, WT | Wearable Technologies has something for Soccer fans. Wearable Experiments created a fan jersey that will surely make you feel the game and enhance your experiences. Haptic technology is embedded on the shirt that connects fans with the game through touch. By doing this, the football fan shirts are physically and digitally connecting you to your favourite team in a brand new way that has never done before.

Football Fan Shirt from Wearable Experiments on Vimeo.

It’s already half way through UEFA 2016! The game is pretty intense as well as furious at the moment. Who do you think will be the European Champion this season?
Me? I go for the world champion : German Nation Team!

It is that time of the month…..again!

Every woman on this planet will know what we mean with this. That time of the month…where your mood changes to turn you into a mini hulk and the minute after can put you into tears. Hormones rising up and messing with your body and finally it. Your period is here, again, as every other month. Now start the worries.

You want to wear those awesome white shorts that you like that much but….somehow you don’t feel comfortable doing it because you know “accidents” can happen if you what we mean…But no worries! If you are always wondering whether is it time to change your tampon for a new one or not, company My.Flow developed a tampon monitor, which alerts the user as to the saturation level of her tampon via a notification on her phone. It takes the physical form of a small clip that the user can discreetly attach to her belt or undergarments, and feed her tampon string into.  The tampon does not contain any circuitry or batteries; it merely has conductive thread running through its center through its string, connecting to the circuitry that is contained on the belt clip. So stop wondering and asking your friends around if you have some stains.

But it is not only about the “accidents” we have to worry about, it is also the painful cramps some woman suffer, you feel me right? What can we do to fight that? Painkillers? We would rather not. Most of the times it helps a hot water bottle, a package of chips and snuggle in bed, but this is not enough. Livia is a new pain management device. It tunes into the wavelength frequency of your menstrual pain and blocks the pain from registering in your body. Livia aims to put an end to the painful cramps  with its drug-free solution for menstrual pain. Livia’s technology is based on the “Gate Control Theory”. It transmits a pulse that is keeping the nerves “busy”. Busy nerves means that the nerve-gate is closed, therefore pain signals cannot pass through and are unfelt, Yeiii!

So no pain, no stains, now what else? Well, if you are not a tampon girl, there is also something smart for you out there. LoonCup is a smart menstrual cup that tells you exactly how full it is, and when it’s time to refresh, it has an embedded sensor that speaks directly to your smartphone. The LOONCUP will precisely track your fluid volume, fluid color, and analyze your cycles (or at least that’s what they promised when they launched on Kickstarter since the product is not out there yet…)

Besides these products, is there something we could do to take advantage of having our periods every month? They will be there anyway so maybe we can use that insane amount of blood we loose to track our health as well? That was the first thought of The NextGen Jane a company that patented a method for capturing menstrual flow and transformed it into medical samples. Menstrual flow contains more than just blood; it is also rich with cells shed by the ovaries and uterus. Those cells, paired with genomics tools, might open up a window on women’s bodies and give early warning of cancer and reproductive diseases. They used 3D-printed prototypes that extracts liquid from a tampon. The method holds great promise for the home-diagnostics industry; it is simple enough for a woman to use in her own bathroom. We will need to wait a bit longer to see it in the market as they are still working on it.

Carinwear is another product from Dutch company Lifesense-Group. Although it is aimed to help women to train their pelvic floor muscles and to have a better bladder control we also see a lot of potential in identifying those non-expected leaks! Carinwear is a rechargeable sensor that is placed on their special pocket of the protective underwear that comes also with it. Snap the sensor on the protective underwear and wear it during the first three days of each cycle. One cycle is two weeks and by repeating this in each cycle, it gives you insights about progress. So this is in fact 2×1, exercise your pelvic floor muscles (which is always good) with their app and wear the protective underwear for any kind of leakages! Support them now on Kickstarter and help them get funded! But not only that! You can see them life at the WT | Wearable Technologies Conference in San Francisco on July 12-13 since they will be exhibiting! Who knows maybe we can go back home with a new pair of underwear…

We see the light at the end of tunnel with all these new products that aim to make our periods less painful and more “enjoyable”! Goodbye little hulk!

“We Help our Clients to Miniaturize” – Interview with Cicor Field Applications Engineer Rick Elbert

We are glad to welcome Swiss company Cicor at our WT | Wearable Technologies Conference 2016 USA on July 12 in San Francisco. Speaker Rick Elbert is the US Field Applications Engineer for the company. The last 16 years, Rick has been working within the micro-electronics industry with projects ranging from miniaturized wearable devices to class III implants. Curious? Read our interview with him below:

Cicor technologies helps turning visions into reality. How can your company especially help wearable tech product makers?

Every technology competency of Cicor AMS is about miniaturization, it’s what we do. Our engineering teams working with our Wearable Tech clients to assist the design beyond the sensor element and then miniaturize it to a form factor that is best for the customer. We are equally well suited to work with startup and fortune 500 companies; with the ability to identify the needs of our clients and create an ideal solution catered to them.

You realized a very innovative contact lens for Implandata Ophthalmic Products GmbH. Can you explain what it is capable of and which target group it was built for?

The target market for the Implandata wearable is anyone that has a history with glaucoma or early indications of the disease. What’s exciting about this medical device wearable as well as most of the medical wearables is that it takes the patient out of the doctor’s office. Before this, a patient had to make an appointment to have the pressure within their eye checked, giving the doctor a reading at one point in time on one given day. Medical wearables are now allowing physicians to look at continuous data over days; allowing them to see patterns throughout the patient’s normal daily activities

What is your favorite wearable at the moment?

My favorite wearable right now is the FitBit Charge HR my wife gave me as a present. It has created some fun and sweaty competition on our house. As for medical device wearables, I am really looking the continuous glucose monitors to have a huge impact in diabetes care.

Interested in getting to know Rick and to learn more about how Cicor can help your company making better wearables? Make sure you don’t miss his speech on July 12 at our conference in San Francisco!

Devices To Help You Stop Your Bad Habits.

There are many reasons why a person would want to quit smoking or to drink less. There are global health issues across the board with over consuming these types of drugs. However, wearable technology is here to help you grow through your habit changing process.

Smoking:

In 2015, Chrono Therapeutics spoke on the main stage at the WT | Wearable Technologies Conference 2015 USA about “Reinventing Quitting with a Super Wearable.” Chrono’s patch-like devices combine wearables and drugs – introducing a new paradigm on how to treat addiction in healthcare. The patch creates a three-pronged approach that maximizes drug therapy and redefine the customer experience.  What drug is it putting into you? Nicotine! The sensors monitor when you are craving smoking, then injects a tiny bit of nicotine in your system. You can wear the patch anywhere on the body anytime. There are two components – the control unit and daily nicotine cartridge (has to be exchanged every day). The device must be worn for 10 weeks and sends information to a cloud (e.g. insurance) every day. The reason for 10 weeks of continuous use, is because after 10 weeks of recording your personal data and slowly getting you off nicotine, you are able to reach your quitting goal. Their data cloud also helps you build quitting skills, increase motivation and efficacy of the nicotine therapy. It contacts you with digital coaching via text messages. Since then, Chrono Therapeutics has placed their patch in other fields of application: depression, anxiety, attention deficit disorder, pain, Parkinson’s Disease, allergies, and asthma.

Trade your cigarette box for the Nicotrax smart case. Their technology works by recording every time you take a cigarette out of their smart case. The data is analyzed by unique triggers that you repeat every time you wish to smoke; after eating, in the morning, etc. Each person is different, that is why Nicotrax has an algorithm that is specific to each person’s habits. Researchers, doctors and counselors have access to their platform.

Smokebeat is an application that can pair to any AndriodWear device. The UK on the app is quite simple. It monitors how often you are smoking, shares it with your network and gives you incentives on how to stop. This includes the money you are saving and the social emotional support of your network. The algorithms compare your progress from the moment you begin throughout every day. There is no hiding how many cigarettes you smoke anymore. Smokebeat will be there with you through to good and the bad days of your habit changed. Somatix Inc. is a platform that Smokebeat operates from. Developers looking to use social media and hand-to-mouth interaction (ideal for wearables) can contact the team to learn more about using their platform.

Alcohol:

Smoking isn’t the only thing someone can be addicted to. The next topic on the wearable list is alcohol. BACtrack is the newest hand-held breathalyzer on the market. They have 4 different products of various sizes, and professional accuracy. There are two breathalyzers that you hook up to your smartphone, blow into and see your BAC level on their app, ZeroLine. They also work alongside the Apple Watch. You simply tap your watch app, blow into their device and see your current level. They have an SDK and API available if you would like to work with their hardware. Check out the video below to learn about their customer interviews at SuperBowl 2016.

All habits are hard to break. The best environment for one to quit something, is one filled with support. You can use these devices, alongside the love of your family and friends to kick your bad habits out the door. Summer is the time to start. Use the sun to grow into the top performing person you wish to be.

Stay Away From Stress !

Stress has a significant impact on human society and health. In the short term, stress of daily life has an immediate effect on the body; such as back pains, and fatigue. However, chronic stress puts our health at risk if we don’t notice. To ensure a healthy life, it is important to monitor your stress. Here are WT | Wearable Technologies’ recommends devices for you to lower your daily stress.

Vinaya
Vinaya – a company based in London aims to fill the gap in the wellness market with ZENTA. ZENTA is a personalized coach for both mind and body. While tracking your activity, sleep quality and breathing patterns, ZENTA can also track one’s emotions, stress levels and overall mood. How can ZENTA do it? For your body, it measures variations in heart rate, respiration, perspiration, physical activity, and other key markers of your emotional states. For you mind, it logs your progress through daily touchpoints and  encourages you to practice interactive breathing exercises. Vinaya notices that the great thing about happiness and positive energy is that it’s infectious. ZENTA is positioned to spread the happiness.

Olive
Olive is a haptic and intelligent wearable and app that conquers stress. Olive is aimed to guide you to overcome stress. It understands when you’re stress overtime by discreetly nudges you through gentle taps or LED lights on your wrist. Then Olive suggests simple solutions for stress for example, stress management exercises, massaging pulses on your wrist. Moreover, Olive identifies moments when you’re feeling your best and worst to monitor stress. It captures your happy moments by double tapping.

BioRICS
BioRICS offers a method to realize real-time stress measurement by combining measurements on the body with physiological knowledge. The Stress Level Monitoring (SLM) is based on real time measurements of heart rate (using a watch or belt), body movement and temperature. These variables are processed by an algorithm that adapts to the individual and his/her time –varying characteristics.

Recently Professor Viera Stropjakova at Slovak University of Technology is working hard with her team to design a ring that measures stress levels based on skin conductivity. In May 2016, the prototype was released. Professor Viera revealed that at first they experimented with a wristwatch-like monitoring device. However, they discovered that the index finger on the non-dominant hand is the best place to sense stress levels. According to the team’s observation, the top most part of the skin (stratum lucid) includes a barrier that changes thickness due to nerve activity. Along with the data of blood pressure, heartbeat and breathing frequency, the ring aims to collect accurate information about stress levels.

You may feel there is nothing you can do about stress. However, it is not healthy to live with little stress; some of the best projects are completed under a tough deadline. If you can’t avoid a stressful situation in life, then using wearables can help alleviate it. WT| Wearable Technologies hopes these wearable above can help you.

Wearable Tech – The New Hotel Must-Have ?

It is difficult to find a new way for standing out in the competitive tourism market. Many hotels are differentiating themselves by including wearables in their hotel services. It is a megatrend in 2016 that wearable technologies can well rewrite and reshape the travel experiences. We once featured wearables enhancing your travel experiences here. Yet, to cover all aspect of travel, today we are narrowing in on hospitality services.

TUI Smart band
The European tour operator TUI Group sent a trial of their TUI Smart Band to its flagship resort hotels in Turkey. The idea is to turn TUI Smart Bands into a guest’s room key, air-conditioning control unit and payment systems. This allows for easy contactless payment on services such as drinks, entertainment and fitness facilities. Additionally, the smart band is connected to the existing TUI My Holiday mobile application so you are able to monitor your spendings throughout your stay.

VIBs bracelet
Two hotels on the island of Ibiza have given guests the ability to use VIBs, also known as Very Important Bracelet. This smart bracelet is the product of the Tecnalia applied research centre. Similarly, VIB enables clients to access hotel rooms without the need for a key. VIB bracelet also allows you to make payment via PayPal system. Moreover, you can share experiences on social networks through the numerous tactile screens and receive completely personalised services, while guaranteeing privacy protection.

Qing
Qing is an RFID/NFC wearable payment and access management bracelet. They offer their solutions to hotels and resorts to connect with guests. Qing is expected to offer customized experiences and increases customer satisfaction. Qing provides fast and comfortable cashless managements. Qing offers new revenue streams and increased turnover for any hotel that uses their services. Moreover, with Qing hotels managers can easily track guests’ information.

Wearables are the gateway to offering the truly personalized and seamless experience that is simple to giving consumers what they want. As long as the benefits to them are made clear, including how their personal data will be used and safe-guarded, and a pretty ascetic, consumers are more likely to be excited to integrate with wearables technology during their holiday.

WANTED! The Next Disruptive Innovations in Smart Textiles

Consumers use more and more wearable technologies in their everyday life, incorporating smartphones and social media seamlessly. Smart clothing is the next step into the future. AiQ Smart Clothing Inc., a key player in this field, and WT | Innovation World Cup are looking for a cutting-edge innovation – a completely new textile solution, including fabric (or textile construction on fabrics or other textile objects), garment engineering, and power systems. In light of this, we asked Mark Chen, CEO of AIQ Smart Clothing Inc., to share his thoughts and views on WT | Innovation World Cup and what’s next in the smart textile industry.

You´ve been a long time partner of the WT | Wearable Technologies Innovation World Cup. What are your aims in being involved in the Innovation World Cup Series?

Innovation World Cup is the best way to stay engaged with global cutting edge IoT players via condensed presentation, product demonstration and mingle sessions. We appreciated the great talent been summoned by WT and inspired by their innovation every year.

The special prize for smart clothing is powered by AiQ. To help understand the market better, what do you see as the next developments in the smart textiles industry?

In the next twelve months, we believe smart textile industry will progress itself from technology demonstration to usage trial and product introduction. In Asia, strong elder care demand driven by rapid aging population is leading well-being usage trials. In sport & fitness, human vital sign such as heart rate and motion monitor garment are introduced worldwide. Early adaptor feedback and data analysis will soon drive next wave of design evolution for each sport category by 2017.

AiQ also provides a deep-dive session for the winner of the special prize category. Who do you encourage to participate in the WT Innovation World Cup? What can participants expect from a collaboration with AiQ?

AiQ, as a pioneer of smart garment industry since 2009, have been built up a strong garment design team with broad portfolio of textile components, electronic/textile mixed design processes and rapid prototype capabilities to integrate electronic designs into everyday wears — clothes, pants, or headbands.

When a wearable device adopts a garment form factor, customers could easily adopt it in a nature and comfortable way with great potential to enable new usage models. Hence, deep div participants will enjoy the opportunity to have dialog with AiQ senior executive team to brain storm benefits and possibilities of enabling garment based user interface with AiQ. Two type of participants can greatly benefit from the collaboration: for non-textile wearable device designers who would like to get closer to their end users in garment form, this is a great opportunity to discuss transformation from pure electronics to textile. For textile form devices, participants will find possibilities of design improvements for critical garment characteristic such as washability, conductivity, and durance.

The Innovation World Cup is the world’s leading open innovation competition with participants from all over the globe. Submission to the WT Innovation World Cup is completely free, you can register at http://ift.tt/1xu4NMt. The submission period ends on October 17th, 2016.

Hearables still on the Rise

Hearables are still on the rise since Nick Hunn first introduced their name at the European edition of our WT | Wearable Technologies Conference in Munich 2014. We regularly introduced the hottest Hearables to you in our magazine and there is more to come. Check out these 3 newcomers in this product category:

Kanoa are a new kind of headphones “engineered to musical perfection”. They are ideal for athletes as they still allow you to hear what’s happening around. Also they are completely wireless, fit securely into your ear and come with a sleek charging station.

But that’s not the only cool new startup in this space. Aware is a Bluetooth headphone with embedded biometric sensors which can measure data such as brainwaves, heart rate, steps, distance traveled, and calories burned, and more. The hearable can track brain waves through EEG and provide real-time feedback about focus, stress, sleep patterns, and relaxation.

And also one of the big guys joined the hearables club this month! Samsung released their latest wearable called Gear IconX! The new wireless earbuds combine fitness tracking, real-time performance feedback and also allow you to listen to your favorite music or to take calls.

So let’s wait and see if fitness tracking is now moving from the wrist to the ear. Follow our news channels to be the first to know what the future will bring!

News Roundup – Spring Edition 2016

It’s time again for the quarterly news roundup. A few months have passed since the last one along with some relevant events that took place in the previous months. Let’s got back to April!

AGM (America`s Greatest Makers) started in April. The AGM is a TV contest for One Million Dollars to begin a start-up that integrated the Intel Curie Module in a way never before dreamed of.  WT| Wearable Technologies had its very own representation at the contest with Wearable Tech princess and BD Manager USA, Ayliffe Brown. She was competing as TEAM SAV3st against over 20 teams.

Nokia went again recently shopping and decided that it is not such a bad idea to acquire a health company such as Withings. And because they can afford it as well, the Finnish company disbursed €170 million ($191 million) in cash. The acquisition will significantly boost Nokia’s portfolio of wearables and fitness devices, bringing 200 Withings employees and products into Nokia’s advanced technologies division.

Sony patented what could be the camera of the future. Sony’s patent application describes a pair of lenses with an organic electroluminescence display screen that allows you to view video, images, and other information. An onboard video recorder lets users record what they see. They can be controlled by the user with the blink of an eye and also paired with an app, so you don’t take pictures   every time you blink…

Two big names partnered on May. Apple and SAP partnered to bring the SAP HANA platform to native apps for iPhone® and iPad®. This joint effort will also deliver a new iOS software development kit (SDK) and training academy so that developers, partners and customers can easily build native iOS apps tailored to their business needs.  These native apps will provide access to core data and business processes on SAP S/4HANA, while taking full advantage of iPhone and iPad features like Touch ID®, Location Services and Notifications.

To finish spring and welcome summer we organized for the 3rd time the WT | Picnic around the world! On June 1 and 2 the WT | Picnic was in 10 cities: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Munich, Barcelona, Milan, Copenhagen, Salem, Chennai, Taipei, and Auckland. They featured talks about jewelry, smart clothing, virtual reality, tracking devices and apps. This was only a sneak peek of what it is coming! Our 5th anniversary of the WT | Wearable Technologies Conference in USA is around the corner and to celebrate this special occasion we have celebrities among the speakers such us Russell Okung from the Denver Broncos, the Senior Vice President of Unicef Ventures or the VP Internet of Things business innovation of SAP.

Stay tuned for the summer version!

What happens if you need a few million items? – Interview with WTUS16 speaker Jason Kra, Li&Fung

Jason Kra is the President of FRC, a sourcing arm of Li & Fung Limited, which is the world’s largest apparel & hard goods sourcing organization. He will be speaking at our WT | Wearable Technologies Conference 2016 USA this year! Get a first idea of his presentation in our exclusive interview with him:

Li & Fung is the leading Asian company to commercialize products in the Asian market. How can your company help wearable technologies product makers?

The wearable world needs to think about scalable supply chain. It may be one thing to make a few hundred or thousand of an item but what happens if you need a few million? Is there a scalable supply chain for smart wearables? Making an activity tracker is one thing as every one is the same, but if we make fashion clothing or bags smart we have to deal with so many more factors. We have fit, color, trend, fabric, subjectivity, and many more. Soft goods such as apparel are very complex as there is a lot of variability and you cannot get huge production runs of 1 item. There is much more diversity to the quantity of styles and of course less units for any 1 item. So we say in wearables “hard is easy and soft is hard” and as the world of wearables move from “hard” things to “soft” things the supply chains gets infinitely more complex and diverse. This is what Li & Fung can bring to the market, a scalable flexible global supply chain to any product category.

Which are the top 3 countries when it comes to making wearables?

Our goal is to be able to mass produce wearables for all market segments. Currently the tech world lives in Taiwan, Japan & Korea when one thinks of top Asia countries for wearables. China is growing at a massive rate and will be by far the largest producer of all things tech enabled very soon if not already. There is a tech start up movement in China and will only grow bigger. The ability to really rapid prototype anything in China will make it not only the low cost scalable production country, but also the quick rapid proto and proof of concept country as well.

Which is currently your favorite wearable?

I am a big fan of all things chargeable. At the end of the day every person has devices which always run out of power at the worst times. We need to have more functional wireless charging products and capabilities. We created a great scalable wireless charging device that is in production which is very affordable for all levels at retail. We see chargeable as a core component that can be added to so many existing products. At the correct price, nearly every person would have a need. Chargeable is not a fad but really a necessity as we become more “connected.” Wireless chargers may have the best exponential growth curve of any wearable product.

Meet Jason in person in San Francisco on July 12 and 13! Join us for WTUS16!
