ULTEEM: Noninvasive Epilepsy Monitoring Wearable That Attaches To Any Ordinary Eyeglasses

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness. According to the CDC, in 2015, 1.2% of the US population had active epilepsy. This is about 3.4 million people with epilepsy nationwide: 3 million adults and 470,000 children.

ULTEEM is a sensor solution that transforms ordinary glasses into smartglasses. It allows to non-invasively record the electric brain activity generated by the temporal lobes. Developed in collaboration with the Centre Suisse d’Electronique et de Microtechnique (CSEM) and sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA), the ULTEEM has been successfully tested at NeuroTec.

Use cases

Temporal electroencephalogram (EEG) provides valuable information for long-term generalized epilepsy monitoring and electrooculogram (EOG) signals are widely used in vigilance monitoring, reports CSEM.

WellsCare Becomes First Korean Medical Device Company To Launch Product On Best Buy

WellsCare, a member of Born2Global Centre, became the first Korean medical device company to launch a product, the IASO, on major American electronics distributor Best Buy.

The IASO has been sold through Bestbuy.com’s Health & Wellness category since June, 2021. The device was featured in the Top Deal list, Best Buy’s main promotional event, immediately upon its launch and sold in record numbers after 10 days in the Top Deal promotion.

The IASO is a hands-free, wearable cold laser pain relief device that enables self-treatment of various pain types. It provides users hands-free immediate, pain relief through cold laser technology, which is frequently used by hospitals to treat sports injuries.

WellsCare signed a vendor master agreement with Best Buy on September 27, 2020 and confirmed the supply of IASO by finalizing a vendor program agreement (equivalent to a supply contract) the following November 12. This process had begun in 2019, when Wellscare participated at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, when a Best Buy representative noticed the IASO and recommended that IASO be sold through the retail chain, the company said in a press release.

WellsCare CEO Lee Sung-won said, “I was told by a spokesperson for Best Buy’s healthcare department that the sale of IASO is the first time that a product from both a Korean startup and a Korean medical device manufacturer has been sold at Best Buy. For now, our goal is to send shipments every two weeks to BestBuy.com online site and over 800 offline locations in the U.S. and to achieve sales of at least USD 53 million through the steady demand for the IASO.”

WellsCare has recently completed the IASO Ultra upgrade, which adds a back pain function to the device. Nuvo Group’s Remote Uterine Activity Monitoring Module Gets 510(k) FDA Clearance

Remote pregnancy monitoring company Nuvo Group announced that it has received FDA clearance to add a new uterine activity module that provides capability for remote monitoring of uterine activity (UA). With this clearance, INVU can provide a reliable, passive alternative to existing methods of UA measurement. INVU uses only external sensors, allowing it to be used without any invasive component or the need for an in-hospital or in-clinic procedure.

INVU’s UA module was tested extensively in a clinical study with 80 patients, in which the INVU UA was recorded simultaneously with and compared to the intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC), the current gold standard of care.

This clearance, which supplements INVU’s previous FDA clearance for remote monitoring of fetal and maternal heart rates (FHR and MHR), expands the clinical utility of the platform to enable antepartum fetal surveillance, such as non-stress tests (NSTs), to be performed non-invasively and remotely, according to a press release.

MIT Engineers Successfully Integrate AI-Enabled IC Circuits Into Sewable Fibers

Recently, MIT announced that it had successfully embedded sensor circuits consisting of multiple ICs and connectors into fibers that can be used for clothing. How does their new invention solve challenges faced by wearables, and could it be the future of wearable devices?

“When you put it into a shirt, you can’t feel it at all. You wouldn’t know it was there,” said Gabriel Loke, MIT PhD student and one of the co-authors of the study.

How can smart fiber help wearable devices?

Wearable devices need to be flexible and comfortable. By design, wearables cannot flex, bend, or change shape to fit a particular surface. Wearables such as smartwatches consists of a ridged circuit connected to flexible straps, writes Sam Brown in ElectroPages.

The fiber, developed by MIT engineers, is thin and flexible and can be passed through a needle, sewn into fabrics, and washed at least 10 times without breaking down. Making a digital fiber “opens up different areas of opportunities and actually solves some of the problems of functional fibers,” says Loke.

Currently, the fiber is controlled by a small external device. The next step will be to design a new chip as a microcontroller that can be connected within the fiber itself, a stop on the way to a working “fabric computer” Loke says.

What are the potential uses for MIT’s new fiber?

Future digital garment combat applications that go beyond recording individual health biometrics to sharing alternative sensor information are something the MIT group has considered.

During combat, the new digital fabric could help to map hazards and threats based on sensor input from multiple soldiers’ garments, according to Forbes.

The digital fibers could also be used in fabrics for medical bandages or compresses.

According to Loke, the fiber with temperature sensor-enabled, could be useful in spacecraft for detecting and measuring the impact of micro-asteroids.

The idea of these types of smart fabrics have numerous use cases. These sensor-embedded fibers could also be used to investigate plants and other organic life. “I think that really opens up a new dimension,” Loke says.

One of the biggest achievements of this research was that the team was able to modify the composition and structure of ‘elastomer’, a polymer compound with excellent elasticity and resilience, and use existing semiconductor manufacturing processes to apply it to the substrates of stretchable OLED displays and optical blood flow sensors for the first time in the industry. The team were then able to confirm that the sensor and display continued to operate normally and did not exhibit any performance degradation with elongation of up to 30%.

What are the practical applications of Samsung’s flexible OLED display?

Samsung’s new display has a low resolution, but its flexibility and ease of use proves that it could be a good candidate for future wearables. The stretchable sensor was made in a way that makes continuous heartbeat measurements possible with a high degree of sensitivity compared to existing fixed wearable sensors. It could also be used in smartwatches and smartphones.

“Our research is still in the early stages, but our goal is to realize and commercialize stretchable devices by increasing system resolution, stretchability, and measurement accuracy to a level that makes mass production possible,” said principal researcher Jong Won Chung, co-first author of the paper. “In addition to the heartbeat sensor that was applied in this test case, we plan to incorporate stretchable sensors and high-resolution freeform displays to enable users to monitor things like peripheral oxygen saturation, electromyogram readings and blood pressure.”

South Korean health care startup Sky Labs successfully raised $20 million in new funding from existing and new investors, raising expectations for its aggressive foray into global markets. The accumulated amount of investment is USD 30 million.

In addition to returning investors such as Atinum Investment, Moru Asset Management and Soo Investment Capital, new investors such as KB Investment, Korea Investment Partners and LB Investment participated this time. It is noticeable that big investors managing more than KRW 1 trillion in Korea participated in the investment. Sky Labs explains that such a great achievement was possible because the technological competitiveness and business capacity of the company were highly recognized.

Sky Labs developed CART-I, the world’s first AI-based ring-type heart monitoring platform, which attracted attention in the healthcare market. CART-I consists of a ring-type wearable medical device and user’s application and medical professional’s web platform and enables atrial fibrillation patients to conduct monitoring when they are not in a hospital. In addition, the photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor in the ring monitors the bloodstream in the finger to measure irregular pulse waves. The measured data are transmitted to a cloud platform to have AI detect and analyze atrial fibrillation and the result is delivered to the user’s application and medical professional’s web. CART-I earned CE-MDD (Medical Devices Directive) and is being prepared for U.S FDA approval.

Sky Labs has expanded its business in overseas markets since the beginning of this year. In January, CART-I was selected for clinical research to monitor atrial fibrillation led by professor Timothy Betts, a cardiologist at Oxford University Hospital. In April, Sky Labs signed a contract with Titan Commerce Continental Services GmbH, the largest wearable medical device distributor in Germany, to sell CART-I in Europe. It is ready for on/offline sales to hospitals and medical institutions in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Encouraged by the attracted investment, Sky Labs plans to expand global clinical research with the UK, the Netherlands, Germany and the U.S and strengthen the marketing activities of the U.S and European branches to take over global healthcare markets. In addition, it expects to develop monitoring devices for various chronic diseases, acquire approval for the devices and recruit manpower.

Amazon’s Halo Fitness Tracker Will Soon Be Able To Judge Your Movement Health By Using Your Smartphone Camera

As we age, our muscles become less toned and less able to contract because of changes in the muscle tissue and the nervous system. This makes us susceptible to pulling a muscle while performing basic tasks like carrying packages or moving furniture. Amazon has decided to prevent that by adding a new feature called Movement Health to its Halo health-tracking wearable.

Launched last year, Amazon Halo is the company’s first wearable. In addition to tracking health, fitness, and sleep metrics, it also measures your body fat percentage (through user-submitted photos) and analyzes your tone of voice throughout the day, reports Mashable.

A 10-minute assessment test will have you put yourself into different poses for the camera. The movements will consist of forward lunges, overhead squats and reaches, feet together squats, and single leg balances. The video will then be used by Amazon’s servers where it will analyze it and use it create a customized workout routine to improve your “stability, mobility, and posture.” The service is expected to launch “in the coming weeks.”

Just like Halo’s body fat scan, the Movement Health video will be sent to Amazon’s cloud servers. There the video will be analyzed only by its algorithms (and not humans), and then promptly deleted both from the cloud and from your phone. The videos are encrypted in transit and when they’re (briefly) at rest in Amazon’s cloud, and no one, including you, ever sees them, Amazon said. The Halo fitness band isn’t used in any particular way during the scan.

Halo will then make a personalized program and deliver it to you. The program will feature corrective exercise videos based on your results to help you improve on your technique. Users should complete these workouts at least three days a week. After that they should reassess their movement using the Halo app every two to four weeks, Amazon said.

Bristol Myers Squibb And Blue Spark Technologies Partner-Up To Use TempTraq wearable in CAR T Patient Monitoring

Blue Spark Technologies, Inc. today announced that Bristol Myers Squibb will use its TempTraq wearable Bluetooth continuous body temperature monitoring platform in a U.S. observational trial to monitor patients across multiple BMS CAR T assets prior to and following CAR T patients’ infusion with the cell therapy. This observational trial will be Bristol Myers Squibb’s first use of a remote patient monitoring technology to track CAR T patient temperatures, which can be a sign of cytokine release syndrome (CRS), a common side effect observed within the CAR T category of therapies.

In the partnership, Blue Spark Technologies will supply the TempTraq wearable device for use by patients with multiple myeloma or lymphoma who are participating in the observational trial to receive a Bristol Myers Squibb CAR T product. The trial represents a first step to explore how technologies like TempTraq, paired with clinical, disease state and scientific expertise can inform next-generation products aimed at supporting specific patient situations such as post-CAR T infusion.

In the observational trial, the innovative temperature technology will provide real-time, continuous temperature data to patients and their clinicians so they can co-monitor for fever, which is one of the early signs of CRS, according to a press release.

“As we progress into next-generation therapeutics like CAR T cell therapies, patient-centric technologies like TempTraq will become supportive components in creating an ecosystem where the promise of cell therapy can thrive,” said Sarah Hersey, vice president, Precision Medicine at Bristol Myers Squibb.

“We are honored that BMS has decided to partner with Blue Spark on this cutting-edge solution,” said John Gannon, Blue Spark President and Chief Executive Officer.

The TempTraq wearable device will be used at as many as 12 BMS cell therapy clinical trial sites across the U.S.

Samsung’s uMCP integrates the fastest LPDDR5 DRAM with the latest UFS 3.1 NAND flash, delivering flagship-level performance to a much broader range of smartphone users.

“Samsung’s new LPDDR5 uMCP is built upon our rich legacy of memory advancements and packaging know-how, enabling consumers to enjoy uninterrupted streaming, gaming and mixed reality experiences even in lower-tier devices,” said Young-soo Sohn, vice president of the Memory Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics. “As 5G-compatible devices become more mainstream, we anticipate that our latest multichip package innovation will accelerate the market transition to 5G and beyond, and help to bring the metaverse into our everyday lives a lot faster.”

Based on the latest mobile DRAM and NAND interfaces, Samsung’s uMCP can deliver lightning-fast speed and high storage capacity at very low power. This combination will allow more consumers to immerse themselves in numerous 5G applications that were previously only available on premium flagship models, including advanced photography, graphics-intensive gaming and augmented reality (AR). Such flagship-level capabilities are made possible by a nearly 50% improvement in DRAM performance, from 17 gigabytes per second (GB/s) to 25GB/s, and a doubling of NAND flash performance, from 1.5GB/s to 3GB/s, over the previous LPDDR4X-based UFS 2.2 solution, reports BusinessWire.

The new uMCP also helps to maximize space efficiency within a smartphone by integrating DRAM and NAND storage into a single compact package that measures only 11.5mm x 13mm, allowing more space for other features. With DRAM capacities ranging from 6 gigabytes (GB) to 12GB and storage options from 128GB to 512GB, the Samsung uMCP can be easily customized to accommodate the diverse needs of 5G smartphones throughout the mid- and high-end segments.

Samsung has successfully completed compatibility testing of the LPDDR5 uMCP with several global smartphone manufacturers, and expects its uMCP-equipped devices to hit mainstream markets starting this month.

KAIST Researchers Develop Anisotropic Conductive Film That Improves Ultra-Fine Pitch Assemblies In High-Res Display

Researchers have moved one step closer to realizing ultra-fine resolution for displays with a novel thermoplastic anchoring polymer layer (APL) structure. This new structure can significantly improve the ultra-fine pitch interconnection by effectively suppressing the movement of conductive particles. This film is expected to be applied to various mobile devices, large-sized OLED panels, and VR, among others, reports KAIST.

A research team under Professor Kyung-Wook Paik in the Department of Materials developed an anchoring polymer layer structure that can effectively suppress the movement of conductive particles during the bonding process of the anisotropic conductive films (ACFs). The new structure will significantly improve the conductive particle capture rate, addressing electrical short problems in the ultra-fine pitch assembly process.

During the ultra-fine pitch bonding process, the conductive particles of conventional ACFs agglomerate between bumps and cause electrical short circuits. To overcome the electrical shortage problem caused by the free movement of conductive particles, higher tensile strength anchoring polymer layers incorporated with conductive particles were introduced into the ACFs to effectively prevent conductive particle movement.

The team used nylon to produce a single layer film with well-distributed and incorporated conductive particles. The higher tensile strength of nylon completely suppressed the movement of conductive particles, raising the capture rate of conductive particles from 33% of the conventional ACFs to 90%. The nylon films showed no short circuit problem during the Chip on Glass assembly. Even more, they obtained excellent electrical conductivity, high reliability, and low cost ACFs during the ultra-fine pitch applications.

Professor Paik believes this new type of ACFs can further be applied not only to VR, 4K and 8K UHD display products, but also to large-size OLED panels and mobile devices.

His team completed a prototype of the film supported by the ‘H&S High-Tech,’ a domestic company and the ‘Innopolis Foundation.’ The study, whose first author is PhD candidate Dal-Jin Yoon, is described in the October issue of IEEE TCPMT.
