Biodegradable Printed Paper Batteries for Medical Wearables

Researchers at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) have developed a thin and flexible paper battery that could one day become an environmentally sustainable option for powering flexible and wearable electronic systems.

The NTU Singapore-developed zinc batteries are made up of electrodes (through which the electrical current leaves or enters the battery) screen-printed on to both sides of a piece of cellulose paper that has been reinforced with hydrogel.

Once the battery has been expended, it can be buried in soil, where it breaks down completely within a month.

In a proof-of-concept experiment described in scientific journal Advanced Science, the NTU team demonstrated how a 4cm x 4cm square of printed paper battery could power a small electric fan for at least 45 minutes. Bending or twisting the battery did not interrupt the power supply.

In another experiment using a 4cm x 4cm battery to power an LED, the scientists showed that despite cutting away parts of the paper battery, the LED remained lit, indicating that cutting does not affect the functionality of the battery.

The scientists think their printed battery could be integrated into flexible electronics such as foldable smart phones that are already on the market, or biomedical sensors for health monitoring.

Professor Fan Hongjin from the NTU School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and the study’s co-lead author, said: “Traditional batteries come in a variety of models and sizes, and choosing the right type for your device could be a cumbersome process. Through our study, we showed a simpler, cheaper way of manufacturing batteries, by developing a single large piece of battery that can be cut to desired shapes and sizes without loss of efficiency. These features make our paper batteries ideal for integration in the sorts of flexible electronics that are gradually being developed.”

Assistant Professor Lee Seok Woo from the NTU School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the study’s co-lead author, said: “We believe the paper battery we have developed could potentially help with the electronic waste problem, given that our printed paper battery is non-toxic and does not require aluminum or plastic casings to encapsulate the battery components. Avoiding the packaging layers also enables our battery to store a higher amount of energy, and thus power, within a smaller system.”

An eco-friendly alternative

With hydrogel and cellulose naturally broken down by bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms, the battery can simply be buried in soil at the end of its life span where it breaks down in a matter of weeks, making it a fully biodegradable product.

To demonstrate the paper battery’s biodegradability, the NTU scientists buried it in the soil of a rooftop garden on the NTU campus. The hydrogel-reinforced cellulose paper started fracturing after two weeks, and degraded completely within a month.

Prof Fan said: “When decomposition happens, the electrode materials are released into the environment. The nickel or manganese used in the cathodes will remain in their oxide or hydroxide forms, which are close to the form of natural minerals. The zinc found in the anode will be naturally oxidized to form a non-toxic hydroxide. This points to the battery’s potential as a more sustainable alternative to current batteries.”

The NTU team hopes to demonstrate the complete integration of the printed paper battery to other printed electronics, electronic skins, as well as energy storage systems deployed in the environment.

UBC Researchers Develop Stretchy, Washable Batteries for Medical Wearables

Researchers at the University of British Columbia have created a flexible waterproof battery that is durable enough to undergo multiple wash cycles. The battery is so pliant that it works even when twisted or stretched to twice its normal length, or after being tossed in the laundry.

“Wearable electronics are a big market and stretchable batteries are essential to their development,” says Dr. Ngoc Tan Nguyen, a postdoctoral fellow at UBC’s faculty of applied science. “However, up until now, stretchable batteries have not been washable. This is a critical addition if they are to withstand the demands of everyday use.”

The battery developed by Dr. Nguyen and his colleagues offers a number of engineering advances. In normal batteries, the internal layers are hard materials encased in a rigid exterior. The UBC team made the key compounds—in this case, zinc and manganese dioxide—stretchable by grinding them into small pieces and then embedding them in a rubbery plastic, or polymer. The battery comprises several ultra-thin layers of these polymers wrapped inside a casing of the same polymer. This construction creates an airtight, waterproof seal that ensures the integrity of the battery through repeated use.

It was team member Bahar Iranpour, a PhD student, who suggested throwing the battery in the wash to test its seal. So far, the battery has withstood 39 wash cycles and the team expects to further improve its durability as they continue to develop the technology, reports UBC.

“We put our prototypes through an actual laundry cycle in both home and commercial-grade washing machines. They came out intact and functional and that’s how we know this battery is truly resilient,” says Iranpour.

The choice of zinc and manganese dioxide chemistry also confers another important advantage. “We went with zinc-manganese because for devices worn next to the skin, it’s a safer chemistry than lithium-ion batteries, which can produce toxic compounds when they break,” says Nguyen.

An affordable option

Work is under way to increase the battery’s power output and cycle life, but already the innovation has attracted commercial interest. The researchers believe that when the new battery is ready for consumers, it could cost the same as an ordinary rechargeable battery.

“The materials used are incredibly low-cost, so if this is made in large numbers, it will be cheap,” says electrical and computer engineering professor Dr. John Madden, director of UBC’s Advanced Materials and Process Engineering Lab who supervised the work. In addition to watches and patches for measuring vital signs, the battery might also be integrated with clothing that can actively change colour or temperature.

This announcement comes in piping hot right after Oppo announcing its first Oppo Air Glass at its Oppo INNO Day 2021 event on 14 December 2021. The glass features futuristic styling with a single lens design and weighs less than 30 grams. The Air Glass is also designed to snap onto custom frames offered by OPPO using magnetic components housed inside the Air Glass frame.

Huawei has released the first introduction video of upcoming smart glasses that support lens replacement and side of the frame equipped with sound system. In addition, it supports the HarmonyOS system.

Earlier, Huawei released two glasses under its name, however, both were in collaboration with spectacles maker Gentle Monster.

The upcoming Huawei Smart Glass does not feature any collaboration branding.

In addition, it offers a wider soundstage range for a more immersive sound experience, perfect for listening to music, playing games, or watching TV and much more.

Qualcomm’s CEO Cristiano Amon says smart glasses could eventually be as widespread as smartphones.

“For all of the devices that are being commercially deployed, you have one thing in all of them — which is Snapdragon XR,” Amon told Yahoo Finance Live, referencing Qualcomm’s extended reality version of its main Snapdragon platform. “So we’re very excited about that opportunity, and it could be as big as phones, if you have companion glasses that you carry together with your smartphone.”

The geko device is the first electrical neuromuscular stimulator of its kind to be cleared for increasing microcirculatory blood flow and adds to Sky’s prior FDA clearances for edema reduction and for stimulation of the calf muscles to prevent venous thrombosis (blood clots) in both surgical and non-surgical patients.

Venous insufficiency and ischemia relate to reduced blood flow in the veins and arteries. This can lead to lower extremity edema, skin changes, and discomfort. Venous insufficiency can progress to chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a serious condition attributed to diminished quality of life and loss of work productivity. In most cases, the cause is incompetent valves. Each year approximately 150,000 new patients are diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, and nearly $500 million is used in the care of these patients. If venous insufficiency and ischemia are left untreated, progressive to CVI can lead to post-phlebitic syndrome and venous leg ulcers, the company said in a press relesse.

Three recent published studies, two led by Das, and the other led by Bosanquet demonstrate geko device generated microcirculatory blood flow increase in the lower limbs of patients with venous insufficiency and ischemia. Both studies measured the increase using Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging, a non-invasive technique that measures blood flow.

The size of a wristwatch and worn at the knee, the disposable device gently stimulates the common peroneal nerve activating the calf and foot muscle pumps, resulting in increased blood flow in the deep veins of the calf, at a rate equal to 60%6 of walking without a patient having to move. The device operates without external pressure to the leg and allows complete mobility.

The cost of chronic wounds is equivalent to more than $3.5 billion, approximately 2% of national healthcare expenditure, with more than 400,000 Australians estimated to suffer at any time.

The new suite of digital tools will provide a one-stop-shop for clinicians caring for wounds, which have become even more acute during the pandemic, especially in regional areas where there are workforce shortages.

Through AI-powered mobile imaging, physicians will be able to analyze and monitor wounds remotely.

Coviu has received roughly A$6.5 million ($4.5 million) funding from the federal government’s Medical Research Future Fund for this project, which will start development next year. Coviu targets to release its digital wound care toolkit on its platform in 2026, reports MobiHealthNews.

Zeit Medical Raises $2 Million In Seed Funding For Its Wearable Stroke Detection Device

Zeit Medical, a Redwood City, CA-based startup that makes early warning system for strokes during sleep, has raised $2 million in seed funding. The funding round was co-led by SeedtoB and Digilife, with participation from Y Combinator, Northsouth Ventures, Gaingels, Axial, Tamar Capital, Citta Capital, as well as angels Greg Badros, Theodore Rekatsinas and a few others in the healthcare business.

The company said it will use the money to expand operations, build the team, and apply for FDA approval.

Study Shows Wearables Could Predict Flu Before Symptoms Appear

Wearables may be able to detect flu even before a patient begins to show symptoms, according to a new study in JAMA.

The study, conducted by researchers at Duke University, showed that a wristband with biometric sensors could detect an influenza infection (H1N1). For the study, the team employed the Empatica E4 wristband, a medical-grade wearable device that measures heart rate, skin temperature, electrodermal activity and movement in real time.

“Approximately 9% of the world is infected with influenza annually, resulting in 3 million to 5 million severe cases and 300 000 to 500 000 deaths per year. Adults are infected with approximately 4 to 6 common colds per year, and children are infected with approximately 6 to 8 common colds per year, with more than half of infections caused by human rhinoviruses (RVs),” the researchers wrote. “Given the highly infectious nature of respiratory viruses and their variable incubation periods, infections are often transmitted unwittingly in a manner that results in community spread, especially as no presymptomatic screening methods currently exist to identify respiratory viral diseases. With the increasing emergence of novel viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2, it is critical to quickly identify and isolate contagious carriers of a virus, including presymptomatic and asymptomatic individuals, at the population level to minimize viral spread and associated severe health outcomes.”

In this study, the researchers recorded biometric data from young people before and after they were inoculated with H1N1 influenza and human rhinovirus.

In the first study, which involved 31 participants inoculated with influenza, Empatica’s E4 wristband detected the difference between infection and non-infection with up to 92% accuracy. The second phase involved 18 participants inoculated with human rhinovirus, and here the E4 wristband detected the difference between infection and non-infection with 88% accuracy, reported principal investigator Jessilyn Dunn, PhD, of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and colleagues.

“This cohort study suggests that the use of a noninvasive, wrist-worn wearable device to predict an individual’s response to viral exposure prior to symptoms is feasible,” authors of the study wrote. “Harnessing this technology would support early interventions to limit presymptomatic spread of viral respiratory infections, which is timely in the era of COVID-19.”

AMF Medical’s Sigi Wearable Insulin Management System Receives FDA Breakthrough Device Designation

AMF Medical announced that its Sigi™ Insulin Management System, for diabetes treatment, has been granted Breakthrough Device Designation by the US Food and Drug Administration. Sigi is the only insulin patch pump for closed loop integration designed for use with standard, pre-filled pump cartridges.

Sigi can be programmed to deliver basal and bolus insulin at both set and variable rates. In addition, as an Alternate Controller Enabled-pump, it is able to receive, execute and confirm dosing commands by interacting with Bluetooth-compatible, continuous glucose monitors and alternate controller devices, like a smartphone or an iController, the company said in a press release.

Sigi is also smaller, lighter and more convenient than current insulin delivery systems. This is made possible by its ergonomic design, which accommodates standard, insulin pre-filled pump cartridges.

This Breakthrough Device Designation will expedite the development of Sigi and prioritize its review in future FDA regulatory submissions. “Clinical study data has shown that Sigi is delightfully easy to use. Study patients have expressed satisfaction as well as eagerness for this next generation patch to be readily available. Wojtusciszyn, MD, PhD from Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) and principal investigator of the first Sigi clinical study.

December 2021: Accumold

In the wearables sector, the mantra is always smaller and smaller components but with greater and greater functionality. As such, when charged with meeting manufacturing challenges that are always exacting, it is vital that companies like Accumold keep on top of the technological opportunities that exist to meet these challenges.

The traditional route to market for miniaturized wearable parts and components is via the tried and tested micro molding process, an enabling technology that has for many years stimulated innovation, and which has produced truly amazing miniature parts, or larger parts with micron features. Micro molding in the right hands can produce fantastic results, and attain extremely tight tolerances repeatable.

But for many years there has been an alternative production process knocking at the door across industry, namely 3D printing / additive manufacturing (AM). Today, many industry sectors have incorporated AM into their manufacturing facilities, often using it as a process that is complementary to existing legacy processes, AM having a unique set of characteristics that make it compelling for some particular applications, or for certain volumes. However, AM processes have never been an option when micro manufacturing, as they are unable to attain the micron level tolerances, and do this in a repeatable fashion. That is until recently!

Today, Accumold has become the first micro molding company to incorporate the Nano Dimension Fabrica 2.0 micro AM technology into its facilities. The Fabrica 2.0 is the first AM process to be able to achieve 1 micron tolerances, and to produce end-use products at volume that are consistent and accurate. As such it opens up for the first time the benefits of AM to the micro manufacturing sector.

And what are these benefits. Well micro AM is much more agile and flexible than traditional alternative micro manufacturing technologies, the requirement for no tooling meaning that designs can be altered with little expense, and the potential for mass customization is now open to players in the wearables sector.

Through the use of a micro AM, manufacturers can also optimize workflow, the technology producing less scrap and fewer tools than conventional manufacturing processes. It also promotes the reduction of iterative process, assembly, and inventory. This means that significant operational cost benefits are now attainable at the micro manufacturing level.

While the Fabrica 2.0 micro AM process can cater for high volume applications (multiple thousands of small parts and components fitting easily in the machine’s build envelope), the introduction of a 3D printing solution for micro manufacturers also means that OEMs are able to reduce the reliance on economies of scale, as the technology makes full production runs measured in thousands as inexpensive as producing one. The Fabrica 2.0 makes low to medium-volume production runs possible that have previously been uneconomical due to the high tooling and set-up costs associated with traditional manufacturing alternatives.

So, the sky is really now the limit when it comes to creativity in the design and manufacture of micro plastics parts for wearables. AM is relatively agnostic to geometric complexity, and so is a spur to innovation, and with micro molding and micro AM both now able to achieve micron tolerances, runs from 1 – 10 million are now as economical as each other when it comes to cost per part.
