E-textile testing and standards are evolving

At the 2020 Virtual Expo session, “Ask the Expert: Textile Electronics Testing and Standards,” Jesse Jur, a professor at the Wilson College of Textiles, North Carolina State University, discussed how standards and testing continue to evolve due to the evolution of textile-based electronics (e-textiles). Jur said that standards have long been a vital resource for communicating and validating textile materials and products. The evolution of e-textiles means the complexity of the product meshes electronics standards with textile standards. “This is exciting stuff,” says Jur. “But we need to develop standards carefully so that newly developed textiles products will meet consumer expectations.”

Jur provided a high-level overview of the e-textile standards process and strategy his lab employs using examples from the NEXT research team at NC State’s Wilson College of Textiles. The goal of his lab is to learn how to design textiles to meet specific standards and how to design methods to evaluate those textiles. The lab does intensive testing of textiles and the results of adding electronic devices to those textiles.

Jur reinforced the importance of standards in supporting global trade requirements and the benchmarking of materials, which is critical for comparing one material to another to facilitate early market adoption. He said it is important for companies to understand standards for different components of an e-textile and the resources available using existing risk assessment guidelines. Especially important, says Jur, is the definition of the use case by which standards are developed in order to encourage consumer confidence and improve the performance of the advanced function of an e-textile.

“When it comes down to it, you want to be testing for the use case,” says Jur. “Many companies don’t have a realistic use case scenario and over-engineer things.”

Registration for IFAI Virtual Expo 2020 is open through Nov. 12. All Expo sessions will be posted on the Virtual Expo platform for viewing during Expo and for 30 days after Expo has concluded.

A vision of the future in advanced textiles

Virtual Expo 2020 advanced textiles education notes industry progress and new opportunities.

by Janet Preus

The Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI) opened the advanced textiles education sessions of Virtual Expo 2020 with topics designed to support the successful research, development and commercialization of new, advanced textile technologies and products.

The first session was presented by Dr. Sasha Stolyarov, CEO, Advanced Functional Fabrics of America (AFFOA). His topic, “The Development of Advanced Functional Fibers and Fabrics,” outlined the progress made in AFFOA’s mission to “rekindle the domestic textiles industry” with its coordinated research, development and commercialization support.

A smart textile capacitive touch sensor can serve as an interface platform in many applications, from smart automobile consoles to wearable human-device interfaces. Photo: AFFOA.

Stolyarov says the vision is “to transform what a fiber and a fabric is,” so fibers become functional fiber microsystems that can be engineered for an array of functionalities and in multiple markets. “We’re talking about a whole new industry, a whole new set of skills,” he said.

In order to do that, it will take a collaborative effort. AFFOA has key roles in this endeavor, he said, that start with transforming traditional fiber, yarns and textiles into what is, essentially, entirely new products that are highly sophisticated, integrated and networked systems. A traditional fiber is a single material with no architecture and a single functionality; a functional fiber microsystem can be multimaterial, multifunctional and created with a device architecture.

This will require a new domestic supply chain, as well, one that can be relied upon long-term and with rapid-response capabilities. “It takes a whole ecosystem to do this,” he said, requiring close collaboration among government, academic and industry participants. “One of the things you can do, then, is respond to a crisis,” he said, such as the one created by the pandemic.

The third part of this effort is “inspiring, educating and training students and workers for the future,” he said. “A skilled workforce is going to be instrumental.”

A DITF “polar bear pavilion” project studied how polar bears make and store heat for long periods of time. The research succeeded in creating a building with similar capabilities. Photo: DITF.

From prototype to commercialization

Justine Decaens spoke on the topic, “Smart Textiles: From Lab Prototypes to Commercial Products.” Decaens is R&D director with CTT Group, a testing laboratory and R&D facility specializing in technical textiles and headquartered in Quebec, Canada.

The world market for smart textiles is projected by marketsandmarkets to reach $9.3 billion by 2024, a 35 percent increase since 2015. In the past, sports applications led the market, but that has changed, with medical and wellness products now taking 40 percent of the total share.

Decaens explained that there are three main technologies used: conductive textiles, such as for power transmission or heating; textile sensors, used in biomonitoring and monitoring environmental conditions or physical activity; and textile actuators, such as phase change materials, shape memory polymers and energy harvesters.

The approaches for making a textile “intelligent” vary, mainly either using conductive ink on a textile substrate or using the textile itself as a conductor with the integration of conductive yarns. There are advantages and disadvantages in each approach, depending on what is needed in the functionality of an end product.

The expense of producing smart products is, in any scenario, still a challenge. “Eighty percent of the cost is from labor, and 20 percent of cost is material, so the goal is to reduce the manual labor,” she said.

The best way to succeed in this market is to use a “market back” approach. “This means that you look at what the need is and then build your product for that need, which produces a much higher success rate,” she said.

The one-on-one R&D partnership

The process of working with a research and development center was discussed in Dr. Thomas Stegmaier’s presentation, “Testing and Standards Integral to Timely Product Development.” Dr. Stegmaier is head of Competence Center Textile Chemistry, Environment, Energy, with DITF [Deutsche Institute Fur Textil Und Faserforschung Denkendorf], a large, textile research center located in Germany. It partners individually with industry participants to develop new technologies and products.

Stegmaier chose four specific projects that DITF had undertaken to solve very different problems. The first project set out to construct a more effective sensorical yarn by wrapping capacitive yarn around a traditional yarn. This allows for greater flexibility in the fabric, as well as the end product.

The product was tested in a project that sought to address humidity and mold control in buildings. “It’s a complex problem” he said—one that requires inexpensive systems where insulation of an existing building is not possible. They now believe that they can develop a humidity sensory textile that could impact the humidity in buildings. “That is a great step forward,” he said.

Another project sought to create a safer collaboration between human workers and robots. A sensory mat was developed that can prevent accidents with human workers by slowing and even stopping the robot mechanism. Something as relatively simple as a pressure sensor mat on the floor can still be difficult to design, because “safe in terms of standards is an enormous challenge,” he said.

The study of polar bear hair guided a project to construct a “polar bear pavilion” to learn how the bears absorb light and turn it into heat, with the only heat loss via the animal’s eyes, mouth and nose. Mimicking the bear, the building was designed with an outer layer, an absorbing layer and inner insulation, and—just like the polar bear—the Pavilion was also successful in storing energy it collected for very long periods of time.

DITF helped a textile manufacturer develop a superhydrophobic awning fabric inspired by the lotus leaf. Photo: DITF.

Additionally, a study was successful in recreating superhydrophic surfaces for awning textiles, inspired by nature’s lotus leaf. Self-cleaning functionalities were accomplished with different kinds of finishings. German manufacturer Schmitz Textiles has demonstrated that its Nano Clean, for example, maintains self-cleaning functionality for five years. “That’s really quite amazing,” he said.

MAS, a company headquartered in Sri Lanka, sought to create a new fabric for swimsuits and active wear. The resulting product is now in the process of being patented.

Understanding intelligent textiles

The Advanced Textiles Conference of IFAI’s Virtual Expo 2020 continued Nov. 4 with a detailed presentation by Justine Decaens on “Smart Textiles: From Lab Prototypes to Commercial Products.” Decaens is R&D director with CTT Group, a testing laboratory and R&D facility specialized in technical textiles, headquartered in Quebec, Canada.

Decaens first offered to define “smart textiles” for her purposes, as there is no one definition used consistently in the industry and chose to use “intelligent textile.” In any case, the world market for them is projected by marketsandmarkets.com to reach $9.3 billion by 2024. That’s a 35 percent increase since 2015.

In the past, sports applications led the market, but that has changed, with medical and wellness products now taking 40 percent of the total share. That said, wearable accessories that are not e-textiles own 70 percent of the “wearables” market.

There are three main technologies used. Decaens divided them into conductive textiles, such as for power transmission or heating; textile sensors, used in biomonitoring and monitoring environmental conditions or physical activity; and textile actuators, such as phase change materials, shape memory polymers and energy harvesters.

The expense of producing these products is still a challenge, she said. “Eighty percent of the cost is from labor, and 20 percent of cost is material, so the goal is to reduce the manual labor,” she said. She also shared that the number one reason startups fail is that they have a created an innovative new product, but there’s no market for it.

Better to use a “market back” approach, she said. “This means is that you look at what the need is and then build your product for that need, which means a much higher success rate.”

Registration for IFAI Virtual Expo 2020 is open through Nov. 12. All Expo sessions will be posted on the Virtual Expo platform for viewing during Expo and for 30 days after Expo has concluded.

Wearables in Sports Medicine: virtual.MEDICA MEDICINE + SPORTS CONFERENCE

For eight years in a row WT | Wearable Technologies is partnering with the world´s largest medical trade show and its leading platform the MEDICA MEDICINE + SPORTS CONFERENCE. It has established as the leading interdisciplinary exchange platform between international sports medicine experts, professional athletes and sport techies, the sporting goods and healthcare industries.

Wearable technologies play an important role in all disciplines! It is also impressivley shown in this years 8th edition of the MEDICA MEDICINE + SPORTS CONFERENCE, taking place virtually on the 18th & 19th of November 2020. This is why you should not miss this online conference:

Right at the beginning of the conference, Prof. Dr. Brockmann will shed light on infectious diseases and their consequences for professional and recreational sports from an epidemiological perspective. Prof. Brockmann works at the Humboldt University in Berlin and at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), where he develops mathematical models for the COVID-19 outbreak. The RKI has been measuring the “pulse of the nation” since the beginning of April thanks to a data donation app. Prof. Brockmann was involved in its development. The idea: Data from wearables (e.g. fitness wristbands and smart watches) can provide clues about the symptoms of COVID-19 – and inform those who affected much faster. With the help of the Corona data donation app, users can make this data available to the RKI. Together with data from other sources, e.g. the official reporting data, the wearables data helps scientists to better record and understand the spread of the corona virus.

AI and digital twins: Future concepts of sports medicine (18th Nov, 1 pm)

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve performance and regeneration (e.g. in ice hockey) is also pointing the way forward. Karl Schwarzenbrunner, for example, uses AI for match analysis. The head of the Education and Science Department at the German Ice Hockey Federation uses a system that combines player data collected via wearables with data from an autonomous camera system and evaluates it in real time. To do this, the system has not only to recognize its own players and those of the opponent. But the puck and some parameters, such as a line rush, must also be defined and recorded. In addition, questionnaires are used to record subjective performance and regeneration. The data is used to actively manage regeneration, prevent injuries, and ultimately optimize performance.
Digital twins are also part of the competitive sport of the future. Prof. Björn Eskofier, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, is an expert in the field of pattern recognition and data analysis. He shows how and where digital twins are used in sports today and in the future.

Tailored exercise programs supported by the use of wearables (19th Nov, 10 am)

In soccer, clubs aim to explore technology innovations (Tis) in order to create competitive advantages. Improving the performance on the pitch, identifying talents as well as maintaining physical and mental health are key areas of application. In order to detect current trends in the application and processes related to Tis in professional soccer, Fee Bayer and Kathrin Neuhofer conducted a study with experts from the sport departments (i.e. match analysts, scouts, athletic coaches, innovation officers, team doctors) of 15 German Bundesliga clubs via online-interviews during season. The study reveals trends in the reciprocal relationship in which Tis adapt to clubs’ meeds (e.g. multidimensional prognostic modelling) and vice versa (e.g. data science competency).

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stephan Odenwald (Chemnitz University of Technology) uses new technologies to analyze motion sequences of athletes, for example in speed skating, and to optimize the regeneration and prevention of injuries. With the help of sensors, he determines, how much force an athlete should exert on the ice. In this way, movement sequences can be documented directly during the trainings and improved to prevent injuries.

Evidence-based diagnostics and wearable technologies (19th Nov, 1 pm)

International sports medicine specialists have been developing a global standard for wearables in sports and fitness on behalf of European sports medicine associations for about two years. Prof. Dr. Yannis Pitsiladis from the University of Brighton and head of the “Sub2” marathon project will show who this seal of approval is relevant for and what is being measured.

Sleep duration and quality are measured by many wearables. Both parameters influence performance and regeneration. Prof. Jürgen Götze from the Technical University of Dortmund will present the current state of research in sleep diagnostics, as well as new approaches providing new insights, and further updates on the complex topic of sleep.
Digital biomarkers, recognizable data patterns from various sources from which diagnostic or prognostic benefits can be derived, are becoming increasingly important for evidence-based diagnostics. Sweat could in fact become a source of data for the next generation of digital biomarkers, as Dr. Noé Karl Brasier, University Hospital Basel will explain in his conference presentation.

Will sweat become a source of data for the next generation of digital biomarkers?

Sports in times of highly infectious viral diseases (19th Nov, 3 pm)

Prevention remains crucial in the fight against Corona. That also applies to sports. Dr. Ulrich Jerichow, CEO, VitaScale, is working on innovative systems that team athletes could wear during the game to prevent infection. More specifically, this involves the development of a face shield made of silicone and polycarbonate with ventilation and respiratory gas diagnostics, in the shape of a flexible disc with a plastic frame and a rubber band attachment for safe competitive sports without restricting vision.

Exciting start-ups and scale-ups: Digital innovations in sports and healthcare (19th Nov, 4 pm)

The session starts with Dr. Holger Hendrichs, VP of greenTEG, who will give a lecture on the subject of “core body temperature” in competitive sports. Hendrichs presents the first findings of the data collected on the Tour de France 2020 and from professional triathlon competitions. Ali Kord is COO of AiQ Synertial and will then talk about the exact recording and analysis of movement data from professional surfers. This new approach can revolutionize training but also the jury evaluation in competitions. Nico Kaartinen, Managing Director of Kaasa Solution, is also an expert on the subject of motion analysis. He will talk about “synchronized mobile motion analysis with inertial measuring units”. He will show examples from beach volleyball and figure skating. Harald Freitag shows how sensor-based movement analysis can be combined with tailor-made training programs. He is the CEO / CTO of movX. The idea behind the movX technology is to record, analyze and optimize complex motion sequences with the help of a portable sensor system. The data and its 3D representation can not only help trainers and athletes, but also support physiotherapists and doctors in caring for their patients.
