IDC Profiles Hearables Makers Bragi, Nuheara, and Waverly Labs as IDC Innovators

International Data Corporation (IDC) has published a new IDC Innovators report profiling three companies – Bragi, Nuheara, and Waverly Labs – for taking a traditional audio-centric hearable device and augmenting it with new features and functionalities.

Read more Hearables are the Most Popular Choice of Wearables Among Consumers, Says IDC Report

Over the past five years, consumers have adopted wearable devices through fitness trackers and smartwatches. More recently, the introduction of new business and enterprise applications have started to bring these devices into the workplace. The same trend can be seen within a fast-growing segment of the smart earwear market, also known as hearables, where new capabilities are being added to the devices that expand the ways in which people communicate, reports Business Wire.

Hearables are technically advanced, electronic in-ear-devices designed for purposes ranging from wireless transmission to communication objectives, medical monitoring and fitness tracking. Hearables must also provide language translation on the device; and enable smart assistants at the touch of a button or through keyword detection, even if the assistant is running on another device.

“Hearables are quickly becoming the hot product within the wearables market, and while many focus on streaming audio and making phone calls, these companies help their wearers with personal and/or professional productivity,” said Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC’s Mobile Devices team. “Two of these companies recognize and help solve the challenges that some people have simply to communicate, and the third adds new AI-based functionalities to other companies’ hearable devices. The end result: wearers who communicate more easily and devices with extended usage and life cycles.”

This Wearable Device Can Improve Speech of People Living with Parkinson’s Disease

People afflicted with Parkinson’s disease usually develop speech impediment; their speech become quieter and less clear that before the disease affected them. In many cases, these people improve their speech with speech therapy. Now, Purdue University researchers have developed a wearable device that can help people with Parkinson’s speak louder and more clearly, by working on a natural reflex that aids in overcoming difficulties with speech.

Read more University of Central Florida Researchers Developing Sensors to Detect Parkinson’s Disease in Seconds

The device, dubbed SpeechVive, uses a reflex to improve communication. It plays noise in a user’s ear when they are talking, which elicits the reflex, resulting in speech that is automatically louder, clearer and lower, reports Purdue University.

“Since the wearable device elicits a reflex, the patient does not need to remember to use therapy techniques to communicate in everyday life,” said Jessica Huber, a professor in Purdue’s Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, who developed SpeechVive. “When people with Parkinson’s disease cannot be heard or understood, they withdraw from communication exchanges, leading to social isolation. This device makes it possible for patients to continue to communicate with their loved ones well into their disease.”

More than 1 million people in the United States are diagnosed with Parkinson’s, one of the most common degenerative neurological diseases.

The device was recently commercialized by SpeechVive Inc. it is already being made available to patients using VA hospitals and through other venues.

“We are working to develop additional routes for individuals to obtain the device,” said Huber, who is also the associate dean for research in Purdue’s College of Health and Human Sciences. “I enjoy developing and testing devices and therapies that can improve the quality of life for people with Parkinson’s disease.”

WPI Researchers Develop Flexible Wireless Oxygen Sensor for Monitoring Infants

Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts have developed a prototype flexible sensor the size of a Band-Aid that will measure a baby’s blood oxygen levels, a vital indication of the lungs’ effectiveness and whether the baby’s tissue is receiving adequate oxygen supply. The wearable device, which is wireless and inexpensive, may allow sick newborns to leave the hospital and be monitored remotely.

Read more Wearable Motion Sensors Monitor Fetal Heartbeat, Could Save Unborn Babies

Ulkuhan Guler, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of WPI’s Integrated Circuits and Systems Lab, is leading the project focused on enabling sick, hospitalized babies to be untethered from wired sensors, so they can more easily and frequently be examined, held, and even allowed to go home. Guler and her team have developed a miniature oxygen monitor for babies, which measures blood gases diffusing through the skin and reports the data wirelessly, reports WPI.

“Extended stays in the hospital are costly and can be a strain on families,” said Guler. “And studies have shown that babies’ health improves when they are with their families. Our goal with this affordable, mobile device is to give doctors more flexibility in monitoring their patients both in the hospital and at home.”

Conventional method of measuring oxygen molecules involves sensors wired to a monitor. But Guler’s device can accomplish that wirelessly. Through an alarm or mobile app, the device also notifies hospital personnel or family members if the baby’s oxygen level begins to drop.

Scientists working
Professor Guler works with graduate student researchers Devdip Sen (in the middle) and Ian Costanzo (Image credit: WPI)

The wearable device is designed to measure partial pressure oxygen (PO2), which indicates the amount of oxygen in the blood. PO2 is a more accurate indicator of respiratory health than a simple oxygen saturation measurement. And measuring the PO2 level via a noninvasive device attached on the skin is as accurate as a blood test, the WPI report said.

In another phase of her research, Guler plans to modify the wearable so that it can be used for adults with asthma and seniors with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Read more Wireless, Soft, Flexible Sensors Show Promise in Monitoring Premature Babies

Guler is collaborating with Pratap Rao, associate professor of mechanical engineering at WPI, and Lawrence Rhein, MD, chair of the department of pediatrics and an associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Ian Costanzo and Devdip Sen, both graduate students in electrical and computer engineering at WPI, also are working with Guler to create a chip that will eventually act as the heart for the wearable device.

“The concept of the technology is that if we have more accessible data for a person of any age, we’ll be able to better take care of these patients,” said Rhein, who has been advising Guler on what’s needed in a hospital and home setting. “The idea of noninvasive, untethered, accessible data collection opens up a whole new world of care.”

Microsoft Patent Suggests it May Soon Launch Smart Fabric Products

It seems Google is about to take the lead in commercializing smart clothing and fabrics. Tech companies like Samsung and Apple are already on the smart fabric train. Now, a new patent filed by Microsoft details the company’s foray into smart fabric technology.

Read more Microsoft Patents Multidimensional Heart Rate Sensor that Delivers Accurate Data on Wearables

The patent filed by Microsoft and published by the USPTO last month details what the company has planned for smart fabric. In a patent titled “Electronically Functional Yarn,” Microsoft describes how it will embed electronic functionality into yarns that are typically non-electronically functional.

The patent image below “illustrates electronic components #306 in electronically functional yarns #304B and #304C. Each component may represent any suitable electronic component. It will be noted that the sizes, locations, and general arrangement of the components are presented for example, and that any suitable arrangement of electronic component(s) on an electronically functional yarn may be used,” reports PatentlyApple.

In regards to the patent figures above, Microsoft notes that “although article #100 takes the form of a shirt, this innovation may also be applied to other electronically functional devices, such as soft-touch computing devices comprising textile exterior surfaces, wearable computing devices (e.g. head-mounted displays, functional gloves (e.g. a glove configured as a control device and/or output device for a computing system), wrist-worn devices, upholstery for furnishings, wall hangings, signage and other information displays, and internet of things (JOT) devices,” the PatentlyApple report states.

This new tech could be used on Microsoft HoloLens for both industrial and gaming applications. However, smart fabrics could be used in almost every industry, including Healthcare, Sports and Fitness, Automotive, Fashion and Entertainment, Home, and Safety/Military.

In September, WT | Wearable Technologies reported on a Microsoft patent application for a wearable band that suggest the company is looking into the possibility of wearable technology being used to help manage the symptoms of involuntary movements commonly suffered by people with Parkinson’s or a host of other disorders.

Wearables Can Reliably Assess Engagement, Reveals Empatica Study

Engagement is a fundamental aspect of our well-being. When people are engaged in what they are doing they are more likely to learn more; in a company setting, employee engagement can boost productivity. A prolonged sense of disengagement, on the other hand, can lead to serious issues such as depression and burnout.

Technology can play a fundamental role in understanding and reacting to people’s engagement – or lack thereof, reports Empatica.

Wearable devices with embedded sensors can be used to derive verbal and non-verbal expressions of engagement. Microphones can record vocal tone; cameras can capture facial expressions, gaze patterns, and body postures; accelerometers can identify body movements; and more.

Read more Embrace2 is the world’s most advanced smartband for epilepsy monitoring

Empatica, a wearable device maker focused on supporting the neurological research market, ran a study on human engagement. They investigated how to assess the engagement of students during lectures and how to characterize the experience of audience and presenters during conferences.

For the study, Empatica used their own E4 wristband. This lightweight and unobtrusive device is perfectly suitable for collecting data in real-settings. Moreover, it allows gathering physiological signals such as the EDA, which is a direct measure of the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS). It indicates physiological arousal, which is in turn related to attention and alertness.

Students in a classroom
Image: English: ATC students in the classroom by Narek75 (Wikimedia commons)

Empatica researchers identified three aspects that characterize engagement: the momentary engagement, the interaction with the teacher, and the general arousal of the student. Momentary engagement happens when activity in class elicits students’ interest and can be captured using increments of physiological arousal. To capture this aspect, the researchers proposed an algorithm to consider “jumps” in the EDA levels as a proxy for “highlights” in contrast to moments without changes that are more likely to indicate boredom. They expected engaged students to have more “highlights” than non-engaged students and to experience more frequent high levels of EDA.

To verify their assumptions, the team collected data from 24 students and 9 instructors during 41 lectures at our institution, using the E4 and self-reports.

The researchers ran a classification pipeline using as input the above-mentioned features and demonstrated that non-engaged students can be reliably identified. For instance, using a Support Vector Machine with the momentary features they designed as input, the team achieved a recall of 81%.

This method could be integrated into systems that allow teachers to identify non-engaged students in time and evaluate methods to (re-)engage them. Students could also monitor their engagement, change their behavior, or drop specific courses in favor of others, says Empatica.

This increases the availability of the experts, improves the support of our dealers and increases customer satisfaction. The goal in the first year is to reduce 20% of field service through the augmented support software. Each of these missions costs us about 1000 euros, as soon as a significant sum comes together,” said Achim Koch, Product Quality Manager, Toyota.

How Exoskeletons are Changing Construction and Manufacturing Industries

Technology is continuing to make revolutionary strides in construction and manufacturing industries. Leading this charge are exoskeletons, also known as exosuits. While majority of today’s $130 million wearable robotics market is for medical exoskeletons, these wearable machines are slowly making their way into the construction industry to increase safety and productivity for all workers. Industrial exoskeletons are growing in number, as is the number of providers, reported Wintergreen Research Inc.

Exoskeletons are a form of wearable technology that helps lessen worker strain from repetitive tasks that are common in manufacturing and construction.

Exoskeletons in Production

Last year, Ford and Hyundai Motor deployed industrial exoskeletons in its North American plants.

The vest used by Ford is called the EskoVest, an exoskeleton designed by Ekso Bionics. It fits workers ranging from 5 feet 2 inches tall to 6 feet 4 inches tall and provides lift assistance from five pounds to 15 pounds per arm. It is unpowered and uses spring assistance to provide between 5 and 15 lb (2.2 and 6.8 kg) of lift support per arm. Ford workers said it’s comfortable because it’s lightweight and not bulky, allowing them to move their arms easily.

Since September, 2018, Hyundai has been testing the Hyundai Chairless Exoskeleton (H-CEX) at a factory in North America. The H-CEX is aimed workers who have to stay in a seated position throughout the day. The carmaker said, by the end of this year, it’ll introduce the Hyundai Vest Exoskeleton (H-VEX) at the same facility. The H-CEX, the company’s first industrial wearable robot, weighs 1.6 kg but is endurable enough to buttress a body weight of up to 150kg. The H-CEX decreases the use of waist and lower body muscles by 80%, reducing the fatigue that results from being in the same seated position for an extended period of time, the carmaker said in statement.

Exoskeletons in Construction

Construction work involves various tasks that can potentially lead to injury. In fact, everyday activities such as lifting and carrying heavy objects are the leading cause of injuries in construction.

Consigli Construction, outside of Boston, is one of many firms employing exoskeletons. These suits will take weight off workers in the field, which will increase their safety and enable them to do a better job because they will experience less muscle fatigue, according to the company, Jack Moran, BIM services manager at Consigli, told Construction Dive.

Willmott Dixon, one of UK’s largest contractors, has been trialing exoskeletons on a number of building sites across the country, reports Peter Smisek at The B1M. The company partnered up with robotics firm Ekso Bionics and started trialing the “Eksovest” – an upper-body exoskeleton that supports arms during lifting – at the Cardiff West Community High School in Wales.

UMich Researchers Develop Japanese Kirigami Influenced Sensor Patch for Injury Recovery and Athlete Training

A researcher from the University of Michigan (UMich) has developed a wearable sensor patch to measure the range of motion of hard-to-assess areas of the body using principles from the Japanese paper art of kirigami.

When Max Shtein, a professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Michigan crashed his bicycle and broke his collarbone, he was dismayed to find that his physical therapist assessed the range of motion in his shoulder with a basic protractor. The method is prone to large errors, and he had no way of repeating the measurements at home.

So, he teamed up with Ph.D. student Erin Evke to design a new sensor patch that can contour to the shape of the body. The patch uses electronic sensors to understand the functional range of motion as opposed to today’s static measurements. Influenced by kirigami, the Japanese art of creating 3D structures from cut paper, the sensor can hug the curves of a joint and yet can be manufactured flat, reports UMich.

“The shoulder in particular moves in a very complex way. It’s one of the most well-articulated joints in the body,” said Prof. Shtein.

“Nobody’s really been able to track it properly with anything wearable, and yet it’s key to so many activities in sports and daily life.”

To make the patch, Evke laser cut a thin sheet of plastic into a labyrinth of concentric ovals. The shape pulls apart almost like a Slinky, and the cuts open into a lacework over the shoulder.

“If you take a sheet of paper and try to wrap it around a sphere, it’s impossible to do so without folding or wrinkling the paper. This would significantly stress the sensors before your measurement even began,” Evke said. “Our cut pattern avoids this problem.”

Because these structures transform from a flat sheet to a wrinkle-free, 3D shape, they can be manufactured with existing, cost-effective technologies. Shtein estimates that the cost of individual sensors could be below $10, assuming mass production.

The team envisions that this kind of inexpensive sensor could be given to physical therapy patients, enabling them to log exercises and see progress through a smartphone app. This could help keep patients honest about doing their exercises and also provide more detailed information to therapists about each patient’s progress.

The study is published in the journal Advanced Materials Technologies.
