Find the Right Balance Between Size, Accuracy, Price and Availability – Interview with EBV Elektronik

EBV Elektronik is a leading semiconductor distribution specialist in Europe. We are happy that they also joined us as a sponsor of the IoT / WT Innovation World Cup series (submissions accepted until November 18). Here a short interview with Markus Vogt, Director Segment Healthcare & Wearables.

1) Can you shortly explain who EBV Elektronik are?

EBV Elektronik is the leading semiconductor distribution specialist in Europe. We are present in 26 countries with 64 offices. EBV Elektronik belongs to the Avnet Group in Europe. The main goal of EBV is to support a customer from an idea to a product, providing different support services, from technical support to finding the right production partner globally.

2) What are the main requirements of your clients?

Depending on the size of the company, the requirements range from engineering and design support to programming and worldwide logistic support.

3) Can you tell us more about EBVchips – how did you come up with the idea?

Sometimes it is hard for a customer to find the right semiconductor for their application. Customers would need a fully customized solution, but it is getting more and more difficult to reach the volume requirements of the semiconductor suppliers. Within the EBVchips program, we collect the requirements of our customers and offer complete module solutions, including the right software. This helps our customers a lot in terms of “ time to market “.

4) What do you think are the main challenges in the wearables market when it comes to electronic components?

The biggest challenge is currently to find the right balance between size, accuracy, price and availability.

5) EBV Elektronik is joining WT again at MEDICA. Who should visit you at the booth?

All visitors who are interested in the wearable market.

6) What are your favorite trends happening in the wearables ecosystem at the moment?

Two years ago the trend was to bring products to the market to collect as much data as possible. Now the trend is what you can do with all the data. Data analysis in the cloud to get information for the daily life of patients is one of the biggest trends.

7) What is your favorite wearable device (besides your own) and why?

My favorites are the true wireless earbuds, which give you more than just the possibility to listen to your favorite music. They are multi-functional information systems.

You can meet the EBV Elektronik team at the WT | Wearable Technologies joint pavilion at MEDICA in Düsseldorf on November 13-16 and several Innovation World Cup Events.

Breast Cancer : Taking Advantage Of Technology For Its Early Detection

According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide.  In recent years, there has been a gradual reduction in female breast cancer incidence rates among women aged 50 and older. Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, in part due to better screening and early detection, increased awareness, and continually improving treatment options.

Early detection can also reduce the amount of time and type of treatment. Cyrcadia Health has developed sensors that you can place inside of any bra empowering women to enhance their monthly breast self-examination in the privacy of their home. They accomplish this by sensing the wearer’s temperature to study patterns in circadian cellular baselines.  The user can wear iTBra for 2 to 12 hours in the comfort of your home. If anything “weird” seems to be happening, Cyrcadia’s team will notify your doctor and you.

Celesstia Health is another device that goes underneath women’s existing bras. The Celesstia wearable consists of 2 thin silicone inserts that come in a variety of sizes (A-DD) and available in clear or nude to be worn discreetly and super comfortable with all electronics embedded in the silicone. Celesstia uses AI to learn regular biometric patterns in the patient’s body and sends an alert if there is any unusual activity detected. Meaning that using Celesstia doesn’t expose the patient’s body to any radiation, or painful tests. The mission is to give women a way to keep tabs on their own health and be alerted to any changes that could be cancerous. If you want to learn more about the technology behind Celesstia, their CEO will be speaking at our upcoming WT | Wearable Technologies Conference 2017 USA, SF July 25-26.

iSonoHealth is a patented 3D ultrasound technology coupled with their powerful machine learning algorithm allowing you to track any changes over time without any radiation at the convenience of your home. The ultrasound scanner gets attached to a wearable accessory; 2-3 mins a month is all that it takes for you to automatically scan your breasts.  The software compares images month to month and gives real-time feedback. With the app, you can control the device, get reminders and share images with a radiologist. The iSono solution empowers you with personalized data to detect breast cancer early when it’s treatable so you can live a full and healthy life.

All these devices are aimed to prevent and detect breast cancer at an early stage. In order to empower women to do regular check-ups and continuous monitoring, they need to be easy and comfortable and also to be able to do it from the comfort of your home.  Unlike once a year mammograms, with these devices, you can regularly track changes over time.

The Next Generation of Wearables will be Soft, Stretchy, completely Hidden and very Use Case Specific

We are happy to welcome StretchSense again as an exhibitor at the WT | Wearable Technologies Conference 2017 USA in San Francisco on July 25-26. It is amazing what happened since we last spoke with our former WT | Innovation World Cup finalist 2014/15. Ben O’Brien, CEO at StretchSense, gave us an update on their latest developments and future plans.

1) Can you shortly explain what StretchSense is about?

StretchSense aims to empower the next generation of wearable technology developers. We believe in the seamless integration of people and data to bridge the gap between human and virtual worlds.

2) What’s new at StretchSense? Do you have any cool new developments since we last spoke?

Our company is growing fast, we’ve moved into our third facility which is exciting. On the product side, we’ve launched an energy harvester. They’re still just testing the waters, but they’re out there, and people are buying them and trying out energy harvesting using body movement. Most of our development effort has gone into our new sensor technology; the new product is made using ultra tough and stretchy silicone which can be attached easily to fabric. Unlike our old sensors, these are intrinsically mass producible which is great for getting to lower price points for consumer/mass market applications. We’ve also continued to improve our circuitry and now have much more accurate and higher speed circuits than we’ve had in the past.

Regarding vision, I believe our primary mission is about empowering people. If you look at what’s happening with technology, with the constant advances in AI and robotics, people will start to be left behind unless they’re also empowered. By creating ultra precise, unobtrusive, self-powered sensor technology, StretchSense can enable people to interact in these new virtual environments. We hope people won’t be left behind by the march of technology, but they’ll be pushed forward by it.

3) What are your favorite trends happening in the wearables ecosystem at the moment?

I want to see applications where people become immersed in technology without knowing it’s there. ‘Wearable tech 3.0’ will be soft, stretchy, completely hidden and very use-case specific. I want to see a maturation of the industry; there’s been a lot of hype, so let’s see some results now. A lot of the first and second generation wearables were fairly obvious devices that just took existing technology and locations around the body – and made those devices smarter or more capable. What I think will be cool about the next generation of wearables is that companies will throw out these pre-conceived notions. Instead of ‘it has to be on the wrist, or it has to be on this part of the chest’ they will just make wearable technology that makes sense for a particular application.

4) What is your favorite wearable device?

I think the concept of a computer brain interface is essentially the ultimate disrupter in wearables. Most wearables are just about tracking things on or around the surface of the body and giving people data about themselves. But if you could hijack the body’s own data gathering systems, our nerves, and our senses, then it could be incredible what we could achieve. So that’s always my favourite, and it’s cool to hear about companies coming out of the woodwork to tackle that. Obviously, that’s a while off, and this technology only augments people’s ability to get the most out of their existing senses rather giving them additional sensory information – but that’s where we come in. So yeah, computer brain interfaces I think are the coolest thing. I wouldn’t try one until they were thoroughly tested, but I think that’s where the world is going and eventually, everyone will have them.

Latest Forecasts on Wearables

A lot of you have for sure been wondering if the wearable is still on the rise of if is going down. Latest forecasts from CCS Insight are showing that the smartwatch market is increasing, estimating that 43 million smartwatches will be shipped in 2017, with sales doubling over the next four years to 86 million units in 2021.

Since the launch of the Apple Watch back in 2015, many other companies have followed the same path, fashion and consumer brands like Fossil or TAG Heuer have been the trailblazer for this category.

CCS Insight also notes that performance fitness watches from companies such as Garmin, TomTom, Polar and Suunto are seeing steady growth while continuing to deliver consistent sales volumes over the past few years.

CCS Insight’s forecasts for smartwatches form part of the company’s broader wearables forecast, which encompasses fitness bands, smart clothing (including footwear), hearables and wearable cameras. This vibrant market is expected to grow in value from just over $10 billion in 2017 to almost $17 billion by 2021.

On another point, Tractica also forecasts an increase of the wearables devices until 2021, with total shipments for all wearable devices to 560 million in 2021, which means an estimated device revenue of  $95.3 billion in 2021.

Tractica’s assumption in 1Q 2015 was that smartwatches would dampen the growth of fitness trackers. It seems to be a larger population of users, beyond fitness enthusiasts, adopting fitness trackers today, including those that are unfit and would like to use trackers as a way to educate themselves about their activity levels. However, the bulk of the revenue for wearables will still come from smart watches due to the higher average selling prices (ASPs).

The Apple Watch has pushed both large and small-to-medium watch manufacturers into action, with multiple micro-segments and price brackets emerging from kids’ watches, fashion watches, watches for the elderly, watches for adventurers, analog smart watches, voice-controlled smart watches, and many others. Tractica’s estimates for smart watch shipments through 2020 have been increased compared to last year, with shipments in 2021 reaching 227.3 million. This is still less than 25% of the overall shipments for watches globally.

Fitness trackers have emerged much stronger than earlier anticipated. Despite concerns about early abandonment of trackers, and the possible cannibalization by smart watches, fitness trackers remain one of the largest wearable segments in terms of shipments with annual fitness tracker shipments reaching 187.2 million by 2021.

While fitness is the overwhelming driver for wearables today, there are a number of micro-segments emerging, ranging from kids’ watches, to smart footwear, to new healthcare devices like wearable patches that will drive this market forward. However we can’t forget the watch industry as we are seeing that smartwatches are playing an important role in the wearables market as we recently saw at Baselworld.

Our Favorite Wearable April Fool’s Pranks 2017

This year there weren’t as many wearable pranks as in previous years, however, we still found a few really good ones:

Toilet paper brand Quilted Northern, for example, came up with a bathroom tracker belt called uSit which tracks your bathroom visits and allows you to track your goals…

Hitchhiking Lyft style… The company came up with a glove called Mono which makes ride hailing even simpler:

T-Mobile presented a sexy pink onesie which gives the wearer unlimited coverage…
